Guest RMWD Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Has anyone tried using the SPV with a dial up connection to their own ISP using the everyday 50 free off peak minutes? If so any tips and how slow is it. I am loathe to mess around myself until I hear of someone elses' experience, but if no one has tried then I'll have ago. I don't trust orange with their statement that such a connection is free within the everyday 50 minutes.
Guest budda Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 I was always under the impression that the Everyday 50 minutes were for Orange numbers & services (WAP and answering machine) or geographical landlines. As most dial-up ISPs (if not all now?) have non-geographical 0845 type numbers they would not be free? Or have I missed out on this for the past two years...? :D
Guest sticklebrick Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 You have been missing out for the past 2 years 0845 number are included in your everyday 50 inclusive minutes. Well according to Orange when I asked them about 6 months ago anyway!!!
Guest Zahid Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 I worked for Orange a few years ago, and at that time when ED50 first came out I knew for a fact data charges were NOT inclusive. Later, when I wasn't working for them 150 told me during a conversation that data calls were inclusive. So I happily used my Orange phone for data on ED50 (I made sure I got the full name and ext. number of the advisor). As suspected, I received an invoice for ALL the data charges. I subsequently got a full refund (after speaking to 3 people going through their 'escalation procedure' because I had the details of the original advisor. In short, if Orange say data calls are inclusive, ask them to double check, then get the name and ext. number of the advisor.
Guest ajb3000 Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 0845 data calls ARE inclusive. I have been using my dial-up account to Virgin Net for the last couple of years through CSD and all have come out of my inclusive minutes. The SPV can connect to this and access both web and wap pages through this connection, wap seems to be the same as GPRS speed wise (but then again the amount of data is so small), web seems a bit slower, but as much as you'd expect (when veiwing on the SPV), when veiwing on a PC using the phone as a modem (i did this with my Nokia 6210, not the SPV), it runs godawfully slow (I do tend to have multiple windows and chat programs open at once however).
Guest RMWD Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Thanks it seems that Orange are telling the truth about this. Now does anyone know how to set up the SPV to use the Everyday 50 minutes and dial up modem?
Guest Danlance Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 yeah - i mentioned it in another post... go to settings > data connections menu > edit connections dial up connections add a new dialup connection with isp details, connects to set to internet You then need to select the connctio you created on data connections screen for internet conections...
