GET GOOD BATTERY LIFE, AT LAST !??!

I'm on my second phone now. I complained to Orange about the battery life of my first phone which was only about 24 hours, rubbish in this day and age for advancing technology (I don't care how much it can do, it should stay alive for at least a couple of days).

Anyway, they were quite good and sent a replacement next day on New Year's Eve.

Wonderful I thought. New phone, try again. Same problem of course. Again, I complained.

Solution

Orange this time suggested, turning the phone off during the night and charging it while turned "off" for the duration of the night. Well, I tried it (charging for approx. 8 hours while off) and 9 hours later I'm still on four battery bars (about 85% power). It seams to work.

Since owning either of the phones, it never occured to me to charge the battery on it's own once without the phone being on. Because the phones come with well charged batteries for some reason, most people may not bother to turn the phone off while charging. This apparantly does not charge the battery properly. (don't ask me why).

Anyway, TRY IT and let us know if it worked for you. :D :( :( :P I'm happier knowing that my SPV has a longer life.

Well dip my sheep in brown sauce, you could be right.

I had mine on the charger and switched on and it stopped charging and showed as fully charged (98%). I took it off the charger and switched it off and chucked it back on the charger and to my shock it is glowing orange (well more greeny orange actually :D ) for the last hour, and it's still going. I think I'll leave it overnight switched off and charging.

When I saw this post I thought you might be a nutter, but I'm definitely gonna give this a try tonight...

If this is a problem then that's definitely something that the ROM update could potentially affect to improve battery life.

Of course needing to leave it switched off every time I charge it is not a good long term solution but hopefully it will point the way for a proper fix.

I don't think you need to leave the phone switched off all the time when charging. But just a few times so that the battery can get its measure of all the juice it can get hold of.

I'm now 13 hours into my first proper charge and still got about 3 battery bars (about 74% in power management-visual) showing.

Come on, admit it, how many of you charged the phone with it off?. We're all keen to play with our toy all the time. Maybe we need to give it a chance to grow.

It's got to be worth a go.

Please report back if you try this.

Problem I have is that I use the alarm clock on the phone every morning so apart from the odd weekend (very rare) this is not possible for me unless I don't want to receive calls for a day :D

I'll give it a go one day

Ok thats great, but i'm on call so unless ihave a nightly ritual of swapping sims from my spv to my nokia, unplugging the usb from the pc, or unplugging the cradle power, and using the adaptor. sleeping, (using the nokia to wake me up!). Then swap sims, usb/power in (oops remembering to power the phone on, before putting it in the cradle..

(unless someone makes a battery only charger, and a spare battery).

But i'll try it tonite, then winge at orange.

Will

i got an adapter that allows you to chare the phone without the docking station in the box...

Yeah, i have one too, but last time i used it, i forgot to plug charger back in, and had a very dead phone, even tho it was in the cradle (usually charging).

charged for 7 hours last nite while turned off. i'll use it in a similar way today as for the week; general use about 1/2 the working day, ~1hr of mp3 playback while walking to and from work, 30 mins email checks and the odd sms. this usually leaves me with 2 bars left after unplugging at 9am and plugging back in at 7pm, guess we'll see how it goes in 9 hours time...

Hmmm. Power management bar doesn't look any fuller than usual. We'll see at the end of the day.

Orange told you to turn the phone off overnight becuase the cradle/charger design is crap.

When the phone is placed in the cradle/charger it is analysed to see if it needs charging, great.

However once the phone is fully charged the charger stops supplying power, thus the battery is used to power the phone (note while the phone is in the cradle the screen saver doesn't work well done orange!). The charger then does not start to charge the battery again until 40%-50% of the battery has been used. So it is completely pot luck as to whether your phone will be fully charged or not (if you leave the phone on while also being attached to the cradle/charger during the night).

I have also resorted to turning the phone off at night as I was tired of picking my phone up in the morning getting to work to find out I only hard 50% of my battery power.

I tried switching mine off last night and I don't think it's really made any difference to my power usage today at all.

I however don't charge mine in the cradle so if the problem is as stated in the previous post this problem won't affect me. I use mine as an alarm clock so just use the power adapter beside my bed for charging and sleep to the dulcet tones of the charger whistling away.

no difference this end either, still getting towards the end of the day and only 2 bars left.

...The charger then does not start to charge the battery again until 40%-50% of the battery has been used...

i've noticed when mine is in its cradle it switches between the chrager and battery fairly regulary, nowhere near getting down to 40-50% before the charger kicks in...

This is probably a stupid question but if i put my phone to charge before its low does it affect the battery life long term? I was under the impression that it did with this type of battery but my housemate has confidantley told me that it does affect its life and since hes an electrical engenerring student and im a loley criminolgist im doubting myself and need some reassurance from you guys.

Plus it would be nice to prove him wrong for a change :D

With old batteries there was the "memory loss" but that was mainly with Nickel type. More modern types ie lithium based still suffer but the effect is much less pronounced :D and it would take a while for it to be noticable.

One way of reducing any effect is every so often let the battery run down completely and do a full charge, Some chargers (not ours  ) can do a recondition charge the help battery life. I went into this on one of my first postings, feels like years ago but only a month and a bit 8) .

At the end of the day your mate is part right.

I gotta say that I've always switched my phone off overnight (can't bear the thought of being woken by drunken mates at 4am), and I always leave it in the cradle ready for the next days battering. By the end of a 'normal' day's usage I tend to still have around 50-60% of battery life remaining. I've also actually gone for TWO WHOLE DAYS ( ) without having to charge the phone (switching off at night though) more than once. So I guess from someone who's always done what was suggested at the start of this thread then I can safely say that an overnight charge with the phone switched off certainly gives enough power for medium/heavy usage every day... :D

however for the rest of us...:D...i tried the suggestion today, no noticeable difference though :( nm

I charged mine's up while it was switched off for the first time today. Turned it on about 1pm, made a couple of phone calls listened to the media player for about 20 mins, its now 10.50pm and there are still 3 bars registering on the power indicator, thats alot better than i've had since i got the phone 4 weeks ago. I'm gonna leave it on overnight cos i use the alarm in the mornings and i'll see how it gets on tomorrow.

I left it going between 11pm yesterday and midday today. Since then have listened to music for 3 hours, spent 20 mins on the phone, used the internet/msn messenger for about 30 mins and the battery is about 70% full now at midnight. This is an improvement to be sure. Using the normal charger now instead of cradle, lets see how that goes..
