Guest lucky Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Hiya has anyone else experienced this problem. i plugged my phone in to charge in my bedroom, i couldnt get to sleep because of this high pitched hum. it took me ages to figure out what it was. I finally figured out that it was the charger, not the phone, it makes this noise whether the phone is plugged in or not. thing is i bought 2 SPV's so i tested the other one, same thing. I have never heard of this problem before. please check as i want to know if they are faulty. thanks
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 I have this too and I think it is fairly common cos I've seen it in other threads. Mine is quiet when the phone is plugged in and charging (led is orange) but is noisy when the phone is unplugged or plugged in and not charging (led is green). I find I can sleep through the noise easy, but then it sounds about the same as my Tinitus anyway.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 i couldnt sleep the other nite cos of a humming noise turned out to be the heating though :/
Guest lucky Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 My only real concern is that the voices in my head cant hear themselves think
Guest SPiV Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003  The charger is a switch-mode type (as nearly all are nowadays). They work by pulsing the mains across a small transformer and filter at a very high frequency in order to step the voltage down. The frequency is actually ultrasonic, but in cheaply designed (usually Taiwanese) chargers, they do whistle audibly due to the cheap transformer materials used. It's not a fault, just crap design! Do note however that it is not good for them to be run off-load (ie without the phone connected to them). This will make it whistle louder in most cases. I switch mine off at the mains when not in use for this reason. Thought some of you might be interested in a reason for the noise they make!... Maybe not! Neil.
Guest DancingMatt Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 Yeah, I've got the hum too. It hums when the phone isn't being charged, i.e. not plugged in fully charged up. Bit annoying really.
Guest p_dog Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 Mine hums and stops me sleeping, as did my old ericsson t28, so i assume it's common. To remedy the situation I use the charger from my Nokia 6210 instead. No noise and it seems to charge the phone fine. Also, I can have that for charging in my bedroom, and the real one on the cradle by the computer where the hum doesn't bother me :D
Guest SPiV Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 PDog, be very wary of doing this! Just because it has the same jack plug on the end doesn't mean it is the right voltage! I think most Nokia chargers are 5V, like the SPV charger. So, others considering this... Do check voltage and polarity (eg. whether the centre pin is + or -) so that it matches the SPV (marked on bottom of docking cradle) before you go and plug any old charger in! I think a burnt out charging circuit would wreck the phone and void the warranty!! regards, Neil.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 it was discussed before and i think you can use the 6210 charger on the spv safely, try a search for full details Disclamier: if ur phone blows up cos i've sed 6210 chagers work its ur own damn fault for taking advice from somone on the internet that you dont know :D
Guest bustamante Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003  i see now i was not having a nightmare, it was true and i'm not hte only parano user of spv hearing evil noises at night.... this charger really sucks with this noise, specially if you have the phone in your room,,,, My charger only makes noise when the phone is disconnected..... I must finish saying that as I had to choose between my spv+charger or my girlfriend I did choose the second option....I hope you forgive me ....
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 I charged my spv on the charger alone for the first time last night. No noticable noise though. So fortunately for me i get to keep my spv and charger and girlfriend :D
Guest bustamante Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 Monolithix: You are then the lucky owner of a silent charger or a deaf girlfriend
Guest bustamante Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 :? maybe that's the point,,,,so you don't hear your charger, and don't either hear your gf complaining about this. It's the good solution, two problems solved at once! Have a good weekend! David
Guest strathclydezero Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 I complained to orange about my noisy charger and they're sending me a new one.
Guest yatpeak Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Well it's certainly not all of the cargers because mine makes no audible noise at all. Maybe I'm just lucky ;) Wyatt
Guest Firaas Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 It's definitely a clear problem that I'm experiencing. I had my charger replaced for another reason (the clip came loose) and the new one seems better...
Guest Weslington Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Strange, my charger's silent and it's plugged in 24/7, charging or not. My old 6210 one was a noisy bugger tho...
Guest HelloDave Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 I think its just luck - my SPV charger is noisy, but I have my computer on 24/7 so I can't really hear it, except occasionally late at night when everything is quiet. I've got a £450 Rotel CD player that buzzes like a b*tch too, so it can happen to anything!
Guest Charlie Mouse Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 I complained to Orange about my noisy charger and they sent me another one. I'll have to wait until I get back from work to see if the new one is noisy as well.
Guest rafiq_p Posted January 5, 2004 Report Posted January 5, 2004 The camera makes a slight noise too if you listen to it closely.
Guest siu99spj Posted January 6, 2004 Report Posted January 6, 2004 OK, I don't have a noisy camera, but I do have a damn noisy charger. Well, damn noisy to me, but then I'm also the kind of lucky bugger who can hear cheapo dog whistles (You know, the ones only at 25kHz or so). Not that I'm complaining about my chargers buzz though. Once you've heard a 25kHz dog whistle, NOTHING compares...
Guest Posted January 7, 2004 Report Posted January 7, 2004 Hello all, probably the first, who posted on that topic had an E100 or maybe even SPV. And obviously that Taiwanese charger manufacturer (Phihong) did not change anything since, as it's still the same problem with the charger of my Qtek 8080 (same as the E200) ! Definitely the used *technique* itself (switching power supply) is NOT the culprit. The chargers of my iPAQs are all from Phihong as well, I have 3 of them and all are absolutely silent (or produce the noise on such high frequencies unable to be heard by me). So I'd assume that either Phihong used cheaper parts for building the Smartphone chargers or that they received the order from HTC to produce cheaper chargers (more probable), as it seems unlikely to me that "defective" chargers would be tolerated for one year in the production line. Anyway: The charger is very small, smaller than those shipped with iPAQs and they charge the phone amazingly fast (much faster than the iPAQs are charged by the original chargers). As a conclusion I can only say: The high-pitched sound they produce is VERY annoying (maybe if I was >50 I wouldn't be able to hear it ;-) and unfortunately I have to unplug the charger every time I do not use it :-( I hope Phihong will fix its design soon. Regards Gerhard P.S. Maybe the one who said that it is not advisable to have a charger plugged in while not actually charging is correct. However the oldest of my iPAQ chargers is almost 3 years and still works. It's always plugged in in my office and only plugged out during the weekends. It still works like a charm.
Guest millpc Posted January 7, 2004 Report Posted January 7, 2004 I find it hard to sleep anyway, so the charger whistling is, in a strange way, quite comforting! Alternatively, just get very intoxicated and you wont notice it. AND, its an excuse to have a beer! :) Oh and in case your wondering, its ACP-12X Nokia charger that you should use. :D Usual disclaimer applies! Dont blame me if you wake up to your phone on fire!acp12x.jpg
