Sometimes wish I'd bought a 7650 instead

Yeah - I know what you mean. If this upcoming update doesn't happen soon, and and address a fair number of issues, mine might be on it's way back under the Sale of Goods Act, as unfit for the purpose for which it was sold.

Hey, think about the advantages too: you don't have a brick in your pocket, you didn't pay as much as the 7650, and you've got unlimited net access at £6/month.

The problems are pains, but soon most of them will be fixed - the Swiss are very happy with their update, so I would've though it'd be waiting for - I'd personally rather have 100 fixes in one go than a minor fix every other day...

If you'd bought a 7650, odds are you would have paid more for it, so that saving can go towards a few more SPV apps. Plus you'd only have 4mb memory to play with, so you might be able to get lots of free games but you wouldn't be able to install that many while storing lots of photos and contacts and other junk, and as for mp3s... For 1st gen hardware the SPV is a bargain; the 9210 is another great phone but look what you pay for it!

The 7650 was great as the first of a breed, but it's looking a bit big now, and i've got to say i prefer the SPV's keypad to the 7650's

I know the SPV has a lot of bugs, but i've been using Windows for 10 years, so its nothing new; I can forgive it a lot of things for packing so many features into a phone the same size as my old 3330! I never need to be bored on a train again! I may be missing the point in that yes, it is meant to be a phone and not just a gadget and yes it isn't perfect, but it's a bit like me buying an Austin 7 as a motorway cruiser and then sueing Rover because it broke down all the time and the brakes were crap :D

But never when you actually look at it, I imagine.

7650 can be had for free as an upgrade at the moment, if you trade in your old phone. i really don't want rid of my SPV guys - i think it's great. But it really was misbehaving that day, and I'd had enough. Sometimes, you just want to make one phone call, and then it chooses to freeze or do something bizarre. It's like looking after a particularly tiring infant. ultimately rewarding, but hard work, especially when it burps milk-vom at you.

well I can put your mind at rest a little. I had a 7650 but I am sooo glad I got rid. It was still bug ridden when I got it (earely adopter again) and I went through 4 all with faults that Nokia Services Centres could not fix. Eventually it went back for good. At least the SPV can be updated OTA and I am sure that at some point in the future somone will find a way to let us use all the PocketPC stuff that is out there.....

It doesn't actually look as though this software was sanctioned by Nintendo and as they are usually fairly enthusiatic about suing the ass of anyone who rips off their ROMs, I would assume that the authors of this emulator will soon be finding themselves signing in to the Piddletrenthide Sunshine Rest Home for the Terminally Bankrupt!

Yes, but assuming they are not providing ripped off roms then theres not a lot nintendo can do I dont think, as emulators in themselves are not illegal.

Yeah, most emulators are released with a few demo freeware ROMS and they give you a converter that will take normal (copied by the user from their own personal gameboy (fair use)) game roms and convert them to whatever fromat is required (if conversion is necessary).

On the 7650 the big issue would be that most good games are 1Mb roms or at least 500Kb so your 4Mb of memory won't go very far at all.

Once Orange make certification reasonable, y'all will have a gameboy emulator (my guarantee :D).

Emulators are perfectly legal, as are roms IF YOU OWN THE ORIGINAL GAMES. Look at phoinix/liberty on the Palm OS for examples.

7650 is a brick with no memory.. P800 is a brick with Sony ultra expensive memory..

I remember first seeing the 7650 on the T-Mobile MMS advert. It didnt look that big then, but once i saw it in the shops the size was kind of shocking, even with a built in camera. The keypad was also even fiddlier than the spv's. imho i think we've come out on top in terms of hardware, and (of course) are only being tied down by the certification.

This is supposed to be 2.5G(?) tech, which means its the first step to a new generation. It has been said we're beta testers for the SPV, but all owners of 2.5G technology are beta testers for the 3G tech that is (slowly) on its way, and should really expect some of the problems that come with brand new technologies

The slow adoption here is mainly due to the government screwing over the telecoms companies for 3G rights (billions upon billions of pounds). Look at Japan where the government encourages telecommunications - they're testing '4G' there now! 3G is about to come out here apparently - www.three.co.uk. Very expensive (but snazzy) handsets, £50 a month minumum subscription, but unlimited calls and a ton o data - you get what you pay for I suppose..

Those are some niice phones :D I would guess its just a matter of time before the costs are reduced though. We can but hope

Gameboy roms are 'freely' :? available all over the net and are fairly small in size. There is little or no chance of Nintendo tracking down the average user and doing them for roms on their 7650.

It actually isn't as easy to get gameboy roms these days as it used to be - Nintendo got out their team of lawyers and shut down a whole lot of them. No persuing of users, its the sites they don't like. Although, according to the law, its perfectly legal to have images of games you own.. I suppose some of those site admins owned a LOT of games :D

The gameboy is a fab piece of kit anyway and the games not that expensive - anyone seen the new GBA? I'm getting me one of those..

The dodge the sites used was to say "You are only allowed to download this ROM if you own a copy of the game yourself. This site is merely providing a service to legitimate owners of games" but they didn't place any tests to ensure people followed these rules.

To some degree I can see how Nintendo are right to shut these people down legally, but it's the internet anyway, so all the stuff is still out there, it's just a little further underground... they're certainly still out there on peer to peer networks... (or so I'm told  )
