Guest frankwilliams Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 My all locations explorer and IA album time limited demos have just expired! In conclusion: The SPV is a great handset if you don't expect miracles from it. :D Orange can expect me to cancel GPRS as soon as their promotion is over - I don't use messenger, I did pop3 for a while and I (THANKFULLY) haven't really battered downloads on it. There just aren't enough decent 176 by xxx websites to justify Orange stinging me for ££££'s on a per meg basis. I will never buy software which patently SHOULD have been included with the SPV - image viewing, file viewing and GPRS counter. Only decent thing Orange have done is let me send free MMS's. Certification, or more correctly the lack of it, will mean that we will never get the multitude of freeware available to pocket pc users AND you will all be forced to buy types of software readily available for free elsewhere. As I said, the phone is great and I really do appreciate mine, except for the battery, oh and the alarm clock feature, and the fragility of the camera when you are drunk and in need of taking a photo, did I mention it hangs sometimes?, and none of my friends have MMS compatible handsets and etc etc etc
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 I agree, SPV has many flaws, not sure you have highlighted the best ones! SPV optimised websites will increase in number, but the Orange one alone is very good! Image Viewer - As you can only attach images to MMS anyway, the MMS app probably is sufficient? (I have IA Album, it is great, but shouldn't necessarily be free!) File Viewing - should it really be included? The average user may not need it. GPRS Counter - Fair Enough! Certification - I agree, altho I see why O need to protect their network. A good middle ground needs to be reached. Battery - Yep, bad, fingers crossed for update 1. Alarm Clock - yep, crap! Hanging - Ditto as for battery :D Friends not having MMS capable handsets - not really Orange's fault :( More and more will tho... P
Guest frankwilliams Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 OK, maybe you got me on the friends not having MMS compatible handsets! :D What happens when someone without all locations wants to delete files not associated with any programs on your phone to make room for more downloads etc?
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 What happens when someone without all locations wants to delete files not associated with any programs on your phone to make room for more downloads etc? Someone plugs it into their USB cradle, loads activesync, clicks explore and deletes them from there.
Guest frankwilliams Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 What if you didn't have access to active sync at the time and had large emails or new programs to download?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 get an sd card and wack them onto there. or download activesync from ms (its free) and use IR
Guest frankwilliams Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 I got a 256 sd card and active sync installed on work/home/friend's PC's already Mono, just saying you shouldn't have to pay for something so simple as file browsing on your SPV without a PC involved.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 a lack of any kind of file explorer built into sp2k2 is one fairly major fallback on MS's side of the phone. i get your point but most people have a pc in their home now, and imho those that dont are not as likely to buy a phone with a spec such as the spv.
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 It's not an isolated SPV only issue though, my previous phones: Sony J70e Nokia 6110 Phillips something or other None of them came with a file explorer/deleter either which is just completely ridiculous.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 i have a j70e as well, why would i have eveer need a file explorer with it?
Guest spvman Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 My old 9210 came with an excellent file explorer... and the whole thing was certainly a lot smarter than my present so called 'smart' phone. I'm not gonna pay out for stuff that should be on this phone out of the box...and since theres bugger all software available for it I guess my purchace of a 128mb sd card was a little over the top. Oh and just for the record Orange can ram their gprs once the promo is over. Rant over
Guest DJHope Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 I hate certification! :D protecting the network pah just an excuse, why not allow radio off execution? other than that yes the hang-ups annoy me but since i stoped using the mms software to take photos it hasnt hung up (IA Album is amazing, even have an icon straight to the camera on my fone desktop for immdiate taking of pictures, that might shut the 7650 crew up). As for explorer, well it is a phone they are marketing it as a phone how much of this software do you get on other phones, sub £100 although yes microsoft have the software for explorer right their, the pocket pc version would have taken seconds to convert, this frustrates me.
