Lockups: how frequent?

Recommended Posts

I get the annoying lockups where the "signal connection" LED blips as usual but on pressing any button it becomes apparent that the SPV has locked up (or at least the screen cannot be activated). As documented elsewhere, the only fix is to briefly remove the battery and re-boot.

Of all the SPV problems this is really the only one I can't live with - after all, what is the point of having a mobile phone if you can't guarantee it will stay on unless you keep an eye on it?

I get these lockups at least 2x a day, sometimes as many as 6 or 7 times a day - VERY frustrating. I haven't installed ANY software or done much mucking about, although I do have a 64MB MMC card which contains MP3s.

Does anyone else experience this problem so severely? It seems to happen in clusters i.e. constant lockups for 3-4 hours then OK for 12 or so.

If you have a similar experience I would appreciate knowing the frequency of your lockups below. If I seem to be unlucky I think I'll be after a new phone from CPW.

Haven't had to remove the battery as yet.. I also have a 64Mb MMC, so I doubt thats the prob..

Might be related to SD cards.

I was getting random lockups and I had a PQ 128MB SD card. It was getting really bad and 2,3 and more lockups each day.

To try and solve the problem, I did a factory reset (turn on with voice record button pressed and then erase IPSM).

Anyway, all went well, but the process wiped my SD card completely (I had backed it up previously).

Then, when I turned my card on again after the reset the phone asked me if I wanted to format my SD card to work with the phone. I assumed that it already was formatted as I had been using it before.

I said yes to the format and I haven't had any lockups since? Coincidence?

More interestingly is that I have done a couple of factory resets since, and it doesn't wipe the information on the SD card during the reset process anymore.

So, there may be something here?

Anyway, my SPV has certainly got better, unless I am just imagining things?

I had exactly the same problem - it regularly locked up for no reason. After phoning Orange and going into their shops numerous times, they eventually agreed to give me a new phone.

If you haven't already, start hassling Orange for a new phone and don't be fobbed off with "it's a software problem and so it will be the same on all phones"

If I do a factory reset, will I need to contact Orange about getting those GPRS and MMS sim updates again? I assume that because they are SIM updates, I won't...

I'm tempted by the factory reset option. Can anyone tell me exactly what the difference is between what you get pre-installed from Orange and the factory-resetted version of the phone? Cheers! :D

You won't lose your GPRS and MMS SIM updates. These remain intact.

Follow the instructions at the address below to reset your phone. Backup the SD card to PC first and remember to have your SD card in the phone when you do it and have a battery with plenty of charge.

Also, backup your contacts via activesync to your PC or over the network to Orange.

http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=13

Also, when you turn on your phone again after doing it, don't panic if it takes 7 or more minutes to "turn on". The Orange screen is displayed for quite a few minutes, then the Smartphone 2002 screen is displayed for quite a few minutes.

Eventually, you will be be back up and your IPSM will be reset to "out of the box".

You'll need to restore contacts, pop mail settings, etc.

I think i have found a pattern with the lockups on my phone. But I wanted to put it to you guys to see if you can help substantiate it.

Basically if I leave my phone on the Home screen for a period of time it WILL lock up, however, If left on the programs menu it doesnt ever lock up !!

A problem with the XML or just the home screen ? I dont know..but if those of you having problems with lockups wanna give it a try id be interested in hearing the results...

Lockups seem to happen mainly for me when the camera is attatched and I leave the phone on the home screen for a while (until the display goes off). Then it often doesn't wake up again  It has happened with the camera off as well though, normally when the keys have been locked.

Basically if I leave my phone on the Home screen for a period of time it WILL lock up, however, If left on the programs menu it doesnt ever lock up !!

Was it locked while on the home screen, becuase obviously you can't lock it on the programs menu?

it can be locked or unlocked...doesnt matter....it still freezes.

Need more people to try though ...Id like to see if theres a pattern

Yeh i have a different homescreen now, one i made up myself, not only is the phone 10x faster (no sh*t, wrting texts no longer pauses etc etc) i also rekon its more stable DO NOT USE THE ORANGE HOMESCREENS, their have been numerious tips to this effect but really take note!

i use my own custom home screen and a colour scheme i downloaded, but i have regulary used other homescreens with no problems..., my phone has never hung.

does the power button respond? i've found in most cases when the phone gets bogged down and slow as hell, if anything is going to respond the quicklist does. maybe you could try this?

i had exactly the same problem with my SPV, rendering it almost useless. after a number of technical calls to Orange and numerous SIM updates, one of the people i spoke to ran a 'diagnostic test' which apparently helps them identify faulty phones. Bingo - mine came up as faulty!! a replacement handset was shipped the next day and i have had absolutely no problems with it since.

in my opinion, the quality of the support you get from Orange depends on who you speak to - it took at least half a dozen calls before anybody ran the 'diagnostic test'!!

also, i am a great conspiracy theorist and i think that Orange are deliberately fobbing people off with c**p reasons and excuses as there are so many faulty phones out there that they couldn't possibly cope with all the returns. therefore, they give you a load of old bull about software problems, etc, in the hope that you will forget about it until the update is released.

This should not be accepted - i recommend all SPV users with faulty handsets to continually hound Orange until they replace your SPV with a new, working one.

Mine is working beautifully now and it really is a cracking product.....

I agree completely whith what you say. I had a faulty phone for several weeks and I spoke to various Orange staff about the same problems and they all had different solutions to the problem. I used to work on an IT helpdesk and we all talked to each other and shared knowledge of common problems / fixes.

ORANGE. WHY DON'T YOU WAKE UP AND TALK TO EACH OTHER.

Think of the time it would save everybody.

After I swapped my phone because no-one knew how to fix the hanging problem and it cured the problem.

I phoned their support several days later with another problem and they told me that my previous phone had a fault on it becuase it showed up on an "over the air" diagnostic test. THANKS FOR TELLING ME !!!!

I agree. Orange are useless at support. I would say that only 10% of their helpline staff are helpful the rest seem like telephone answer monkeys watching the clock and and repeating the words "I've never heard of that fault before" , "Have you tried switching it off and back on", "there's a sim update in January". Arhhhhh

PS I hope the staff from Orange are reading this because I'm not the only one.

Why do we not see any adverts on the telly for this wonderful product? Answer. Because it's still in field beta testing with us.

I feel better now

Remember, for best results only power on ANY electronic device while facing northwest, standing on one leg and whistling. It works, I've made a career based on this information.

Well, after a lockup free weekend its done it 3 times today. I've been reduced to trying a hard reset this afternoon.... I only did it 30m ago but I'll let you know if that fixes it. If not, the phone is getting replaced - no doubt about it.

Posted

Phone locked up again this morning.

I'll be calling Orange to arrange a replacement, and if THAT doesn't work after the fabled update, I'll be getting a different phone.

probably the kiss of death but mine hasnt done it since i turned it on yesterday morning....its been on since then over night..played games messed with IA album and settings and made a few calls...

secretly hoping that its fixed itself... oh put a new 32mb sd card in sunday night....but had crashes with that in so dont think its a side effect of that...but who knows

Quite a satisfactory experience calling Orange.... I explained the fault and they are sending me a new phone, battery and charger which should arrive by courier today. I'll give the new kit a few days and then reply to this thread letting you know how it goes.

*fingers crossed*
