Norton Antivirus/firewall Activesync solution

Morning guys,

I just installed Norton Internet Security 2003 and now it won't allow my spv to connect - no error messages or alerts, it just keeps it on the whirly 'connecting' bit ad infinitum.

It is of course a simple matter to resolve, by disabling the firewall, then it connects no problem... But there's an obvious drawback to that.

Anyone know how I can configure NIS to automatically grant activesync access please?

Thanks,

Mrjuglas

I read of another member who had the same problem, contacted orange etc, and came up with no better solution than to turn the firewall off. Anyone else had this problem?

In trying to fix it I went to the firewall settings and added my spv's IP address to the 'trusted' computers, that didn't resolve anything so I tried with its ppp_peer address, and guess what?... Nope, that didn't change anything either.

Don't know about Norton firewall, but I use Zone alarm and get a similar thing.

In Zone alarm you define for each application what rights it gets, as in trusted zone access/serve, internet zone access/serve

To get it working I had to give both ActiveSync and Connection Manager rights to access the internet. This made mine work fine.

I believe it is because the phone is not in the trusted network but I haven't quite figured out how it's networking works since it's on the USB port.

Thanks for that spacemonkey, I'll try playing around with that a bit more.

OK then, that's sorted then.

Here's the solution if anyone encounters the same problem

Basically, it's as Spacemonkey suggested, but in NISspeak it's:

In the status and settings click on Personal Firewall, then Configure

Go to Program control, scroll through the programs to find wcescomm.exe and wcesmgr.exe

set them both to 'permit all'

Problem solved

Maybe you should give 150 a call and let them know what to do. If they at least know that it is possible perhaps they could tell people that they need to configure there firewall to allow complete access for these two programs, and to consult their firewall documentation for details on how to do this. It would probably be a bit much to expect them to know how to set up every flavour of firewall out there as they aren't meant to be computer experts.
