I'm sorry all you people who like this piece of equipment, I am going to have to have my say.

Both Orange and M$ seem to hit the wrong mark with this product for me.

Yes it has more features than most phones on the market today but they do not work or are badly designed. Not if one of the criteria for judging is dependability and quality.

Todays phones do not lock up. They do not have pityful battery life. They do not have menu's that demand a computer literacy degree. They do not take an eternity to switch on and off.

To justify those remarks here's the evidence.

I have had an SPV for 10 days now.

I have not loaded any other software on it (because orange won't let me write it, imagine having to pay Ford if you wanted to fit a none Ford roofrack).

This machine has locked up 5 times on me twice needing a hard reset(thanks for the information on this board because the manual certainly isn't any help)

The battery life without using it and letting it sleep is a measured 23 hrs.

I have just changed the battery on my ipaq and this lasts for about 4 days with regular use. This battry would, in a different shape, fit into the SPV frame. The Ipaq has a screen 4 times the size, blue tooth permanently on (and a decent alarm).

I sometimes write software for a living and that is what attracted me to this kit. Should have checked here first to find out about signatures.

I know it's different and I know it looks familiar to us techies but for gods sake it's not fit for purpose!

If I wrote software that didn't perform two acceptable 'givens' for the competition then no-one would buy it, and rightly so.

It is a smaller pda, one that's miles behind the market and inflexible too.

I don't whinge very often but this really does take a step backward, and with the resources of M$ and Orange behind it. It is a crying shame for the industry.

Another part of my job is to specify phones for use by my companys employees. I would have to increase my helpdesk's staff if I deployed this phone.

I know I'll get flamed but I felt it needed saying.

Now if we could only get a shaver add-on..

All valid points and I'd imagine most people get peeved off with them (damn certification cocku, grrrr...). I'm keeping mine as it has been relatively bug-free and fits my needs (mp3 player, basic calender and makes calls), as well as having just about decent (certainly not great) additional features such as msn and ie. I've kept my T39m for when I need a phone with a ridiculous battery life (2-3 weeks, nice) - hurry up with that battery upgrade Orange! 3-4 days standby would be the standard I'd say..

For all its faults...I'm sticking with it.........I know we're almost guinea pigs...but I intend to bombard Orange this week with questions and demands...and I can be determined when i set my mind.....so I'll stick with it.

My bf has the 7650....and although its a doddle to use, it has its limitations, and it is very bulky and "cheap" in terms of its construction.

I'm afriad I have to agree with Peter. I have desperatively tried to persuade myself to keep this phone for the past 12 days. The screen is fantastic!

My problem at the moment is having a reliable PHONE, not a pocket-sized unreliable computer. The SPV does have great potential but sadly I feel it has been rolled out too quickly without addressing fundamental problems with the software. I know an update will be coming out in the near future but I cannot wait as my work has suffered due to it's unreliability.

The battery life is a MAJOR problem particularly if you are constantly on the move, the alarm function on my handset is temperamental and the phone has frozen several times...frustrating! - now becoming a daily problem. Aside from modifying the XML homepage I have added no software to the phone (has plenty of memory free). Orange weren't able to answer to my problems and advised me that they would send me a new phone, or I should wait for the update.

I guess the bottom line is we all know there are problems with the phone, but if you can wait for the update then with time I think the SPV has the potential of being an excellent communications device. For those who need a reliable phone right now, I suggest you consider an alternative.

Incidently, I missed the 7 day deadline for a return (upgraded), but Orange accepted the phone was faulty on day 14 and have agreed to either a full refund or exchanging it for another phone. I took the latter option... the nokia 7210 option... a company each and everyone of know very well.

The 7210 screen is awful, nowhere near as crisp as the SPV. But I have been through 4 generations of nokia phones and it is the closest alternative to the SPV at the moment. Perhaps when newer Smartphones come out I will reconsider??

Phones dont lock up? 7210 anyone (as stated) i havnt had the problems most have had and love the phone to bits, listen i hate to say it but why is everyone so keen to "send it back" without first getting a replacement and trying that?

Man, I tried the 7210 before my spv and I can honestly say it was more prone to intense crapness - maybe Nokia have addressed the lockups/odd behaviour I saw in the last few months, but I reaaaally didn't like it (looked kinda snazzy though :D). If you haven't got it yet, try for the 6610 - like the 7210, but apparently more stable. And easier to use keys.

i am sticking with the spv? everything that has been said here is true? but i am still persevering with it? if you want reliable with great battery life and fantstic functionality then get a 9210! mine has been great! only problem being it has the styling of a breadvan!!!!! but is very functional if you dont mind carrying a house brick around with you?

tricky

Hmmmm......actually tricky..... I DO mind carrying a housebrick around with me...:D Besides....my bag isn't big enough!

Joking aside, I understand the problems.......but I DO believe that they are surmountable. and the potential is good. I like the design...i like what I can achive with it sofar....it's tax deductable, and any major concerns.....the company can resolve...:(

For now....I'll carry on....

I think I must have been lucky so far. Other than the occaisional lock out (usually when I get an SMS during a call) I have not had any problems.

True the ring volume is not too good, but that seems to be sorted out if you chose a decent WAV - distortion, yes, but at least you can here it!

The battery life IS a problem, but hopefully Orange will release an extended battery soon.

The fact that this phone synchronises with outlook in every way I want it to means that I will be definately be hanging on to it.

Also, you never know, the Orange updates may sort out the problems.

If you decide to ditch the phone, hopefully you'll have a better experience with another one!
