Guest rossy Posted January 13, 2003 Report Posted January 13, 2003 Forgive me if I am being stupid, but I was under the impression that the SPV was a 3G phone. Is this not the case? I was looking forward to football highlights! Also, do we still have no idea when the update is coming...... I am sick of these bugs and want to be able to use my phone to its max capabilities. Cheers.
Guest Bazz Posted January 13, 2003 Report Posted January 13, 2003 Nope. It's 2.5G. However it can do most things that 3G is offering us, albeit a little slowly. The only 3G handsets at the mo are really expensive (and ugly ;-)) and on http://www.three.co.uk. Also not sure how extensive the 3G network is at the mo. As for the upgrade, no word as yet :-(
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 13, 2003 Report Posted January 13, 2003 querty keyboard on one of those 3G's though, and videoconferecning hehe. Anyone know what bandwidth the dataconnection is on the three.co.uk 3G phones?
Guest Emad Posted January 13, 2003 Report Posted January 13, 2003 The network isn't all that extensive, but they're using the O2 network to patch up the holes at the moment. Hutchinson will probably try and eat O2 as well as they're the smallest network (if I recall correctly) - risky, but they need the coverage.
Guest benny Posted January 14, 2003 Report Posted January 14, 2003 I believe the 3G system is supposed to use UMTS, with bandwidths as follows: Rural / Satellite: 144Kbit/sec Urban Outdoor: 384Kbit/sec Indoor / short range oudoor: 2048Kbit/sec The saving grace of UMTS is that it supports four classes of "quality of service" (i.e. you can prioritise packets for transmission depending on their tagging)... Conversational class (voice, video telephony, video gaming) Streaming class (multimedia, video on demand, webcast) Interactive class (web browsing, network gaming, database access) Background class (email, SMS, downloading) Which might not sound a lot, but if done properly is a great way of squeezing extra performance out of the bandwidth available. You can find more info about UMTS below: http://www.umtsworld.com/technology/wcdma.htm B
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 14, 2003 Report Posted January 14, 2003 Cheers mate, just what i was looking for. 2mbit close range conn sounds sweet hehe
Guest benny Posted January 14, 2003 Report Posted January 14, 2003 I've seen a 1.2Mbit/sec UMTS connection over a distance of about 20m last time I was at Cisco, so it *is* possible to get this data rate! Dunno about the capability of the networks in the UK though - I was under the impression that the 3G trial was still only available on the Isle Of Mann. Nice sig, btw! B
