Real Cost of SPV for 1 Year (est.)

My supersonic mathematical+logical mind counted the real costs of this goddamn phone!! The phone turns out to be well F**KING expensive!! Just look at it this way:

You pay anything from £0 to £129 for the phone - I paid £100. Plus you pay anything between £25 and £XXX monthly. I'l take my £40 (not to scare myself with the total just yet). Then you might need GPRS when it is not free anymore. You also need a memory card - it is a must, just as some of the software like explorer and ia album, and gprs when it is not free. Plus a few games, a decent case and a decent pair of headphones+handsfree... Let's count

£100 x 1 SPV

£40 x 12 Line rental

£100 x 1 SD Card

£20 x 1 All-Exp & IA Album

£100 x ? Other small costs.

= 100+480+100+20+100

= £800

So you pay on AVG (very small avg) almost a grand for the bugger in 1 year!!! WOW!!

Minimum (min contract, no soft, no SD..) = £400

No maximum, but a good situation would be round about £1000 with the soft you need all the mem cards and upto £60 Line rental. Add to this another £50 per month for GPRS (even countin 1/2 year of contract on paid gprS) and that would easily add up to

£1500 per year!!!

Right, off to sell my phone!!

Anyone up for buying one??

OH MY GOD....

but seriously... did you not know this is why they practically give phones away. It's not cos Orange is a Benevolent entity. This is the same with any phone. You can buy the phone for £200-£300 on pay as you go or you can get it free if you sign up.

Contract costs are no higher on the SPV than other phones. Except maybe the £6/month GPRS starter bundle, but then you can just quit that... only pay it if you want it.

As to the other costs you quoted... 128Mb SD Card is £40 and you only need this if you want to watch movies/listen to MP3s

£20 each for IA-Album and All Explorer... I think it's nearer £20 for both and you don't have to buy them.

So, basically, the phone is no more expensive than any other phone you get on contract. Yes you'll have more costs if you want to extend the effectiveness of it's non phone features. Yes you'll pay for Data on this which you wouldn't on your 6110, but you'r 6110 doesn't let you do anything with Data...

I think you need to calm down, this is just the way companies get money from consumers in the modern world, it's all over.

For instance I have unlimited Movies on the big screen for a 12month commitment to direct debit £10/month, hey good deal... but x12 months that's £120 OH MY GOD...

My phone and SD Card were free, sort of, as I traded/sold my PDA and bits and pieces for £180, so still got £40 spare.

First phone bill with the SPV was a lot more than usual though, I'll put that down to the "honeymoon" period though. All things considered I think GPRS is gonna come down in price, it has to.

That's all true and the way things work.. unfortunately. But that's not the way you think of it, running to the shop with your tongue on the shoulder, just to get that 1 reserved SPV that you've been wanting for ages.. And guess what?!?!? It's not even what it was advert'd to be.....

SPV=£101

12 Months contract=£257

£358

(Not got it yet though :))

I figured mine would be about £400 including bits n bobs - cheaper than a lot of other phones on the market - look at the 9210 or the 88xx series, now those are pricey.. Also, I'm almost certain they're making a loss on these things - after all, is this reallly as cheap to make as a 7210/T68/any other phone at the same price? (I got mine free, so lotsa phones are at that price ;))

The price you pay for the phone is due the the amount of R&D that went into it...the physical components that the phone comprises of are reletively inexpensive. Take CD's for example, cost about 30p max to physically make but you pay a tenner a time for them.

As for my annual costs

SPV: £100

Contract: 1 Mnth £31

3 Mnths £25

8 Mnths £19

128meg SD card: £50

IA Album/All-Exp/Worms: £40(ish)

Which comes to a grand total of:

£448

Then theres call costs and gprs. I intend to use gprs for email headers only after the bundle expires, so the £4 500k/mnth should be fine.

So by this time next year i dont expect to have spent much over 500 quid, which incedentally is the cost of a sim-free phone ;). Its not that shocking really, me and my flatmates shell out nearly 150 a month between us just for our internet line

Pop down to any high street mobile phone shop and ask to buy a new T68i or 7210, GX10, GD87 or 7650 handset. Add minimum calls, messaging and GPRS, and it will be about the same cost.

OK so you do have the additional costs of SD card and apps, the apps well we know where we all stand on that one, the SD card, has a million uses. I bought mine with a cruzer, which comes in really handy, and it'll keep most of it's value if you want to sell it on.

When the phone first came out I thought I would have to pay close to £200 on contract, £99 and £31/month, bargain.

Cheers, Shire

Why do so many people seem to be paying £100 for the SPV? Are you all stupid or something? It was 99 pence from most sites on Talk 200 from day one. And you can change to any tarrif after 120 days

Posted

I think many sales reps/a lot of literature seems to imply that you should stay on the Talk 200 plan for the year - and it tends to be those that are desperately looking for a bargain who find out what the case actually is.

Previously when I went into an Orange Shop, I was told by the assistant that I could change after 3 months, but it was frowned upon. He offered to change it on my behalf the day after purchase...

yeh but think of the cost to buy an Mp3 player, internet explorer, video player, digital camera and pda---all this would not fit in your pocket and would cost a hell of alot more than the SPV.

Also buying from the link for £100 allowed me to change my tarrif the same day i signed up...

For info, I am on Orange Everyday 50 (£15 per month), I paid £80 for the SPV and I have no other costs (no GPRS costs as they didn't set this up) other than a 128MB SD card at £48 and IA Album at £12.

Total = £320!

This is what I'm paying (if Orange ever get stock!). £89.99 for the phone then £12.99 a month for line rental.. Works out to be about £245.87 for 12 months.
