Guest m223464 Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 Hi, I have an SPV c500 and use the T9 software when writting txts, notes, etc. One of T9's features is Next Word Prediction which is described as follows: Next Word Prediction: Beyond predicting and completing words, the 7 series of T9 predicts entire phrases based on the phrases a user types most often. Phrases, such as "Call me at home" can be entered with just a few keystrokes, helping users to type less while actually sending more messages. Basically this feature is doing my head in as it just doesn't work. It suggests words which have no relevance to the text I'm typing at the time. Does anyone know if this can be disabled? Gareth
Guest Confucious Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 It can't be disabled, just ignore what it sugests and carry on typing. Why does it bug you so much? From what I gather it actually just inserts the word that came after a word you are typing last time you typed the same word.
Guest m223464 Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 It can't be disabled, just ignore what it sugests and carry on typing. Why does it bug you so much? From what I gather it actually just inserts the word that came after a word you are typing last time you typed the same word. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I was writing a txt yesterday and it inserted 2 extra words and jumped past the 1st word so I had to physically delete the word it had inserted. What's the point of a feature like this if it doesn't work at all. Does anyone think this is useful? Does it get better the longer you use the phone. It also predicted a phone number when I was adding a new contact. Now seriously that is just ridiculous. The simplicity of the nokia txt interface (my previous phone) has serious benefits.
Guest Confucious Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 I find it very good. If you inserted a number previously T9 will have learned it and tried to insert it when you started typing something similar. When you get used to it it's actually quite useful.
Guest yoos Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 This really annoys me too... More and more often it doesn't choose correct words/phrases. I mean, it chooses words/numbers that have more characters then I am writing and I have to continuously hit the back space, it's annoying.
Guest Confucious Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 You shouldn't have to backspace at all. just continue typing as if it hasn't predicted anything, you don't have to select what it predicts!
Guest charlbury Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 I would like it to predict the word you are typing as you are typing it. For example, if you are entering extraordinary by the time you have entered "extraor" it presents the best match possibility and you can accept it. Does any predictive text do this?
Guest Disco Stu Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 The C500 does, although it could do it a bit quicker. You just scroll down the list it throws up as you're typinig.
Guest strangechild Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 (edited) Confucious. Please don't try to justify this behaviour. This so-called feature IS NOT TO MY LIKING. This is not "smart" behaviour, it's utterly counter-intuitive and it's downright annoying. Some of my C500's favourite tricks now include typing gu1 everytime I type It', randomly capitalising That and This and adding (I everytime I type (. If anyone knows how to clear the library of previously-typed words (even better if they can knock up a bit of code to do it at each boot) I'd love to hear from them. NO SWEARING OR REFERENCES TO LEWD SEXUAL PRACTISES PLEASE Edited January 3, 2005 by strangechild
Guest Disco Stu Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 Chill out, Strangechild. There is no way of resetting the C500 dictionary for the time being, but it will eventually prioritise the right words if you type them in correctly. :)
Guest Confucious Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 (edited) You can delete the custom dictionary, just delete TW9AW.UDB Sorry you don't like it strangechild but I find it really useful. You can never please all the people all the time and just because it's not what your used too does not make it wrong. Edited January 3, 2005 by Confucious

Or rather it seems to do so inconsistently; some words do change, but Gu1 won't go away. Christ I wish I'd never looked for cinemas in Guildford. Seems I'm being punished till the end of time for it. You can delete the custom dictionary, just delete TW9AW.UDB Sorry you don't like it strangechild but I find it really useful. You can never please all the people all the time and just because it's not what your used too does not make it wrong. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks for this tip, genuinely useful and I'll start doing it on a weekly basis I reckon. This feature /could/ work but doesn't. It sounds good on paper. If you want a demo of how crap this "feature" is, try the following. 1. Put the phone in Flight Mode 2. Power cycle the phone 3. DO NOT launch the messaging app 4. Connect via ActiveSync and delete TW9AW.UDB which is Application Data\Storage. I deleted TW9AW.CDB as well for good measure, possibly not necessary. 5. Start a new text message with the word "It's" (it will be capitalised because it's the first word in the message) 6. Now try to type "it's" in the middle of a sentence. It will capitalise it because as soon as you pressed space after your first ever "It's", it added it to the custom word file with a capital "I". This really slows you down as you're texting. Why does it do that? That is plain stupid. That is a B-U-G. That is Bill Gates laughing that you were dumb enough to buy into his crappy smartphone platform... The problem seems to be connected to punctuation, it's words with numbers or symbols that make it balls up. I sometimes think a Nokia 1100 would give me less grief than this feckin Microsoft Jokephone. To be honest if the 1100 had a WAP browser I think I'd get one...
Guest Confucious Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Why do you need to put It's as a custom word ? Type It, select it and type 's and it works. I havre no problem using the T9 with the C500, but then I've never come to rely on n*kia's t9...

I havre no problem using the T9 with the C500, but then I've never come to rely on n*kia's t9... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't wan't "It's" as a custom word, that's my whole point!! The phone decides it should be! Just like I don't want "Gu1" to take precedence over "It'". I shouldn't have to type "It" then press right arrow then "'s". I should be able to type "It's" and press space and the phone should be smart enough to know what I'm doing. It's a bug Confucious, one which thankfully you've given me a way to lessen the irritation of (by deleting TW9AW.UDB). But it's still a great big stinkin bug.
Guest Confucious Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Just tried and typed 4817 and got It's - works for me without any right arrow. Sorry :D
