Guest moorejam Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 I read somewhere that this was possibile anyone have any ideas???
Guest Firaas Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 Would severely decrease battery life if so...
Guest neuronisis Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 Now that would be interesting if we could. I've read some where that we should be getting a better battery life when we EVENTUALLY get an update. So perhaps a slightly overclocked processor wouldn't be that bad for the battery. Also it could possibly improve video quality/smoothness, what do you think? However overclocking could cause overheating in conjuction with lock ups/freezing etc. P.S. Peace to all the guys for the hard work in getting that IRRITATING certification off our phones!!!! ;)
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 Dunno if it would necessarily cause problems to the phone. On my old palm device (dragonball procesor) you could change the processor speed in software and clock it from the base 16Mhz up to a crazy 32Mhz. It had no heat problems or anything, the only downside was a significant increase in battery usage. SPV may well be similar. Especially given rumors (a long time ago on this forum) that the actual proc speed was lower than originally advertised which if true will totally be a compromise to make the battery at least halfway survivable.
Guest weswes19 Posted January 22, 2003 Report Posted January 22, 2003 If it aint broke dont fix it, overclocking espically physically is a very risking business its not as though you can fit a fan or anything in the phone to keep it cool it might just cause more problems and more lockups and if you really break the phone you wouldnt have a leg to stand on with Orange or Shop Warrenty its bad enough as it is
Guest Shuflie Posted January 22, 2003 Report Posted January 22, 2003 What's the betting that the improved battery life promised in the update is just an underclocked processor?
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 22, 2003 Report Posted January 22, 2003 Overclocking in a handheld device is a little different from the desktop equivalent. In desktop machines the default clocking is generally based on the best performance within heat/reliability standards so overclocking means tackling heat and stablility. In Handheld machines default clocking is generally based on balance performance vs battery life. Normally the battery life issue will limit the clockspeed long before heat even becomes a factor. So over clocking is generally very practical from a hardware point of view, it's mainly an issue of the significant loss of battery life you will sustain.
Guest stevesco Posted January 22, 2003 Report Posted January 22, 2003 I have sucessfully overclocked my SPV. Its now running like a PDA, at 400Mhz. Only gripe is that i have to carry a JCB battery around, and a heat sink the size of vanessa phelts pants.....(aaahhh)... Reminds me of the good old days ...."motorolla brick" (joke)
Guest Firaas Posted January 22, 2003 Report Posted January 22, 2003 The SPV does actually begin to heat up if you begin to play a gameboy game for a while, or listen to mp3s for a while. This could of course just be me warming it up, but I doubt it as it is in a jacket pocket when playing mp3s...
Guest muude Posted January 22, 2003 Report Posted January 22, 2003 So now we know that the SPV can also keep your hands warm.... That's nice...
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 22, 2003 Report Posted January 22, 2003 I asked for that on the wishlist forum ages ago.
Guest shadowblade Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 I asked for that on the wishlist forum ages ago. What an inbuilt handwarmer? ;)
