Guest Tahir Hameed Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Please Wake up and try to discover MS Dos for smartphone. If we can run MS dos in smartphone, we can run lot of software. We can give new life to old software. I think Microsfot is still sleep for this :D. Microsoft should announced MS DOS for windows mobile. Thanks Tahir
Guest chucky.egg Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 :D Are you serious? What DOS applications do you want to run? I haven't used DOS for so long I can't even remember any apps
Guest ga!nusha Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 the only 2 games i remember playng in dos are: lotus and transport tycoon... i don't think ms-dos would come in handy
Guest ga!nusha Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 just remember...i still have 'em 8)

Guest spacemonkey Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 Apart from whether this would be sensible or not, it's basically impossible unless you were to fully emulate a x86 cpu which trust me, is also basically impossible on current smartphones. Most MS-Dos based apps had a lot of assembly code in them and were very close to the bare metal of the pc (which is why there were so many compatability issues between different pc's in those days). The architecture of a smartphone is vastly different to old pcs, different processor chipset, different memory system, different storage systems etc. It just will never fly. Sorry hmm, sorry but the idea of running DOS on smartphone *scares* me...
Guest paul34 Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 I only use MS-DOS to deal with unruly floppies (yes, I still use them once in a while), and to compile java :D
Guest drblow Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 I only use MS-DOS to deal with unruly floppies (yes, I still use them once in a while), and to compile java :P <{POST_SNAPBACK}> :D unruly floppies!! :D
Guest nickcornaglia Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 I knew as soon as someone said it couldnt be done....someone would produce a link. Though PPC and not smartphone....it's not impossible.
Guest ultimasnake Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Not impossible BUT kinda useless, like spacemonkey said about hardware it's also the fact that dos applications are more depending of the loads of keyboard keys then any windows application ever will be :D on the pocket pc they fix that with an on screen keyboard but hey we have a smartphone which complicates allot. also i was working on a fun project which was called SmartDos which was not an emulator but just a series of command which should be possible on the smartphone (you know the default ones, dir, del etc etc) but i didn't ever finish that and have no intensions to :D
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 To get it working they are taking the full emulation approach and the problem with this is performance. From the Pocket DOS faq: My application works under PocketDOS but it is just too slow to be usable. Is there any solution? PocketDOS emulates an 80186 processor in software. On a 206Mhz ARM processor, it reaches the equivalent speed of a 20Mhz 80186 (or 10Mhz 80386) processor. There is no way to make it go faster at present, neither is there likely to be much improvement in the speed of the emulation in the forseeable future. The only option available to increase the speed of your application is to port the application to Windows CE and compile it for the type of processor used in your device.
Guest Confucious Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Well blow ne. I never knew there was an 80186 I thought it went 8086->80286 was the 80186 ever used in an IBM PC or compatable? You learn something every day. Bring back c:> is what I say, all this GUI, I don't know, what was wrong with quill pens? mumble mumble.....
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Intel 80186 microprocessor, sometimes called i186, is an enhanced version of Intel 8086 16-bit processor. Being completely object code compatible with the 8086, the 80186 integrated many system components into one chip, added 7 new instructions, and added new operand types to three existing 8086 instructions. With the exception of integrated components, the Intel 80186 microprocessor is not very different from the 8086, and, because of this, the 80186 may be considered as an embedded version of 8086. The 80186 didn't even have its own version of co-processor and worked with Intel 8087. Although the Intel 80186 was not widely used in the computers as the 8086 and 80286 did, it was successful in embedded processor market. In fact, the processor was so successful, that many different versions of the processor were introduced over last 20 years - 80C186, 80186EA, 80186EB, etc. At this time (November 2004) some of these versions are still in production. From : http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/80186/ I must say I didn't know it existed till I looked :D Well blow ne. Guest Confucious Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 c:\dos c:\dos run run dos run :D The old ones are the best :D
Guest scottishdave Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 c:\dos c:\dos run run dos run I just got it!
Guest Confucious Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 [sexist mode] scottishdave - you're not a woman are you? [/sexist mode]
Guest scottishdave Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 What do you think? In fact don't asnwer that. PS - I was only kidding about just getting it.
Guest xenophobe Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I wonder if JP Software would be up to making a 4dos.com command interpreter replacement for it.... 8-[
