Guest Wlodek Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 Hello All, I wasn't able to find this here (famous last words). If I buy software only TomTom Mobile for another country (say Italy) in addition to already owned UK version, is there a way of using just the maps of both without chenging the install? Shifting things too much on my mSD is awkward. Is there a folder on the c500 where TT will find the maps automatically? Any experience? TIA, W.
Guest kube Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 :D This is really simple to solve! Just copy the map in the same directory (most recently the root of your mSD) where you found your UK map in a seperate folder (say Italy Map) and thats it. Next time starting TTM, he'll ask for the country to be used, at least mine do so. Take care, kube Hello All, I wasn't able to find this here (famous last words). Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 If I buy software only TomTom Mobile for another country (say Italy) At the moment you cannot buy the "software only" for the mobile version of TomTom it comes as a complete package with GPS unit.
Guest Wlodek Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 At the moment you cannot buy the "software only" for the mobile version of TomTom it comes as a complete package with GPS unit. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Still, there seems to be a lot of private ads describing software only, on original media too. I have talked to one such advertiser and he has a perfectly good explanation - I see no point in suspecting all and sundry of stealing software. What is wrong with buying such software from a person who seems to have a good reason to sell it instead of dumping it when it is surplus to requirements? Software is not disposable and there is a very decent after-market of second hand software. Apart from presumption of innocence until proven guilty, I cannot see the logic of having to buy the GPS unit for each country I want to travel in. I drive frequently in Italy, also in Germany and the Netherlands although less frequently and spending some £160 (DABS) or so for each and acquiring 3-4 GPS units sounds a bit stupid, never mind wasteful. If what you are saying is correct in the official distribution network then Copilot has a serious advantage as for an extra £99 you get (software only) all European maps. They also sell software only single country packs. I am sure TomTom cannot be that daft - this would be wasting quite a chunk of the market. Is it a piece of software designed for travelling or not afterall? And anyway, why would TT be releasing the patch for the software to work with other GPS units if they did not recognise the need for 'unwrapping' the package? Best wishes, W.

Software is not disposable and there is a very decent after-market of second hand software. Read your End User Licence Agreement It states that you are not allowed to transfer your licence to another person so you can not legally buy or sell the software secondhand. And anyway, why would TT be releasing the patch for the software to work with other GPS units if they did not recognise the need for 'unwrapping' the package? They did not release the patch to work with other GPS units they did it so it would work on the C500. It was an error that made other GPS units work. One day TomTom may release a software only package but at the moment they do not.
Guest Wlodek Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 Thanks, looks like it will be the software only Copilot deal ... :D W.
