Hi,

I've had my JAM for a few days now. I'm well pleased with it.

I have a whole pile of old PPC Software which I've bough over the years (or downloaded trials of). I've kept all this software. So in the last week or so I've been loading on all sorts of software onto the JAM, trying it out and then removing loads of stuff which doesn't work properly or which I decide I can do without.

I want to make the JAM as streamlined as possible, with the minimum installation of software to RAM, and with everything I really need installed onto the storage card. I've a feeling the easiest way to clean up my JAM is going to be to hard reset it and start loading stuff afresh and I might just do that anyway.

In the meantime, my JAM shows that it has 20 Mb of storage used, and I have 8 3rd party applications installed. Is there a way to find out how much of this RAM each application takes up? Either a standard O/S method, or some freeware app?

Incidentally I am going to have to do a reinstall of a load of my software anyay I think, as 8 apps is far too many to install into RAM, and a bunch of them can and should be installed to the SD card.

For the record, these are my apps:

Bivrin Solutions Pocket Time - a freeware timesheet application. Probably for the chop.

Mapopolis - the best!

Magic Button - great freeware task manager.

Memory Map - perfect for off road cycling and GPS.

Mobi Pocket Reader - I really like this app!

MS Reader - I still have over 200 .lit titles to read on my SD card. Might shelve this one in favour of Mobi and convert all my .lit files to .prc though.

MS Voice Command - this is superb!

CDL - orange customisation - this got loaded at the start with all the Orange settings so I guess it's quite important! Has any one with an Orange contract deleted this and what effect does that have?

BTW, did anyone manage to install MS Voice Command into ROM? If so, how?

Cheers

You can install MS Voice Commander to ROM easy, when you are installing and it asks "Use default directory?", just say no. Select Storage as the place to install (it will show where free space should be, but if you ignore this and say okay, it installs anyway).

Okay, cool. I did try to do that but it said something like what you said there so I figured it wouldn't go in there.

What are the advantages of installing Voice Command to ROM?

BTW, I have decided to uninstall MSReader as I have a simple and free method to convert .lit eBooks to MobiPocket format, and I prefer MobiPocket as an eBook reader to MSReader.

The only real advantage to having Voice Commander in Rom is that it doesnt use up RAM or space on your SD card!!

What method have you got for converting .lit to Mobipocket by the way? I use Mobipocket and would be interested in knowing how to do this.

It's a 2 step process (both easy and both free). There is a freeware program called ConvertLit which now has a GUI front end. Get it here: http://www.hot.ee/dukelupus/ConvertLIT.htm

Then there is Mobi Publisher which is also free for personal use. Get it off the MobiPocket site.

Step 1. Run ConvertLit Gui to convert your .lit file into a generic format.

Step 2. Run Mobi Publisher to convert that generic format to Mobi Pocket format.

It takes less than a minute to convert any eBook, pretty much. I have over 200 classical .lit format eBooks so this is a very useful utility for me and it basically saves me having to have MSReader installed which is handy.

P.S. Am definitely leaning towards a hard reset and another build of my JAM with only required apps installed...
