software to sync emails with thunderbird?

thunderbird is more efficient (on my computer, at least), and i'm using that instead of outlook. is there any way to get activesync to pull emails from thunderbird instead of my default windows xp install of outlook express?

or, alternatively, is there a third-party application i could use to make thunderbird work with my smartphone?
