Guest Jay300zx Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 I know its not smartphone per-se but I have a smartphone too. I have the tomtom3 GPS Bluetooth receiver and want to charge it in the car. The cable that came with it plugs into the receiver and the other end has like a phone (RJ) connection - with 2 wires (Black & Red). Can I cut the end off and wire it to the car battery (fused) side. Would 12V damage it as unit says 5v charge. However, the chargers on ebay look like straight cigarette lighters (12v) chargers. Should I cut the end off this plug and wire it straight to the car? Cheers
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 You need the proper cigarette charger for your unit. Do not be tempted to wire up 12v directly as you may damage the battery and charger. Can you post a picture of this unit as it sounds like it may be one of the older GPS units.
Guest TuurG Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 You should NOT connect your ends straight to the car's battery. It should have 5V. In your case you probably also have a TomTom Carkit. This Carkit is converting from 12V (from CLA) to 5V (RJ connection). There is no real difference between your GPS and the one currently supplied with MOBILE. You can buy the correct CLA adapter from TomTom.
