Right

My orange contract is a rip off and I need something cheaper.

3 are the cheapest so I was thinking of getting a 3 contract and buying an offline C500 to use (I really wanna get a C500!)

Was about to get it then heard that the sim cards might be incompatible?

so what's the verdict? Can I do this?

Probably not.

New 3 USIMs are blocked from working in 2/2.5G phones. I have a new(ish) 3PAYG USIM that does not work with my C500 and an old 3 contract USIM which does, but I only use it occasionally. If you use a 3 USIM in a 2/2.5g phone all the time 3 have been known to block your old USIM and send you a new one that doesn't work.

As the c500 can't access their network it makes sense for them to block them and I believe they are now doing so succesfully - sorry.

The C500 can take a 3 sim card. I do it every now and then when I don't feel like carrying around a chunky video card.

The problem is that texting doesn't work when you do it.

Also, 3 will know that you're not using their network because you will be constantly roaming onto O2, and they don't want that happening so much, so after a while they will send you a new sim card and your old one will stop working.

There are forums discussing these issues around somewhere. Do a search for them.
