Guest chucky.egg Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 I'm trying Newsbreak out, but I've got a problem with the alerts that I can't work out. I've made an RSS feed from work that reports server status. That Channel updates every 5 minutes, and in Newsbreak I've setup alerts for keywords that I've used in the Title and Description fields of each Channel Item. But no alert goes off when a match is found. I've set the alerts to cover two statuses (!UP and !DOWN), so they should go off regardless of the status I'm assuming that the alert is an audible alert, but no text pop-up seems to take place either. Any ideas?
Guest chucky.egg Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 I'm assuming that the alert is an audible alert, but no text pop-up seems to take place either. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've just noticed that the symbol next to the Channel in Newsbreak changes from being a black "A" to being a Red "A", and the symbol next to the Item in the Channel turns to the symbol that you selected in the alert settings. Maybe that's it, maybe that's all it does. Can anyone confirm that? Has anyone managed to get an audible alert out of Newsbreak?
Guest chucky.egg Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 It doesn't seem to be auto-updating either Is anyone else using this that could help me sort this out? The only alternative seems to be the Java app, and I'd rather avoid Java if possible
Guest chucky.egg Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 Getting kinda lonely here, but this thing is driving me nuts alerts They are text and graphics only. Graphics as described above, but with a "Reminder" screen popping up as well Auto-Update This seems a bit flaky to me. With only one channel, and that set to 5 minute updates it all works. When I imported the Channels I had previously setup again it still worked. But when I changed the default update interval it seems to have forgotten about the 5 minute update. ](*,) I think the trick might be to set you default check interval first. Then setup/import the Channels. I'm going to try it out and see what happens. Another tip: When you Export your Channels give the file an OPML extension (e.g. MyChannels.opml) and that way you can import them again later. It doesn't seem to say that anywhere in the manual, but it works.
Guest roma0803 Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Got this thing figured out? I'm using Newsbreak with the auto-update function. Used alarms in the past and I know I got a sound alert, I believe also a notification popup. I did not do it in any specific order but it all seemed to work well. I turned them off. I've got about 50 feeds active (have to do some long waiting sometimes so it kills the time very nice), no need for alarms right now. But could turn them on to test and help out.
Guest chucky.egg Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 @roma0803 Thanks for the offer mate, I'd appreciate some help. I've not tried getting audible alerts again since then, but if I can get them going it'd be cool. I think the Ilium guy was suggesting it was something to do with the phones alerts settings, so could you turn your alerts on to check they work, and then just post your settings and your "Sounds" settings for the phone in general? Thanks fella!
Guest roma0803 Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Ok, let me play with it a bit. I'll get back at it in a few day's.
Guest roma0803 Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 Ok, a small update. I enabled the alarm in Newsbreak yesterday at "new items received". My phone alarmsettings are ON, as they are always. So far I did 3 updates with Newsbreak and only the first update yesterday gave me an audible alert. I don't know if something showed in my screen since I received a call before I checked. So, the 2 latest updates did not give me a signal in any form. New posts were retreived so there should be a reason for an alarm. So far it seems that the Newsbreak alarm isn't always doing what it is supposed to.
