I have just noticed that when my phone gets cold, i.e using it outside in the morning while i wait for the bus, the backlight wont come on untill i warm it up. leave it by the window for 5 min and the backlight wont turn on. put it in my pocket for 5 min and everything is sorted. is my phone faulty or what?

How cold are we talking here? I've never had that problem to date and this part of Kent can get pretty chilly. I know some electronics have problems when you start getting into minus Celsius figures - where abouts are you and how cold is "cold"?

Just asking so we can try to find someone else from your neck of the thermometer and compare like for like.

i live in bristol, not that cold here. no fancy snow etc. im talking using your phone outside for a couple of minutes (esp in the morning) and the backlight doesnt come on. try opening a window on a cold day, put your phone there for 2 minutes and see if the lights go on when u press any key.....mine doesnt :D

This may seem like a silly question, and I apologise in advance for asking it but nevertheless... does this only happen during the day?

The c500 has light sensor and doesn't turn on the backlight and keypad lights if there is enough ambient light for you to see what's happening. You can check it out by coverinh the little hole immediately below the keypad - the phone'll think its dark and light up when you use it. Having said that the keypad lighting doesn't always seem to respond instantly...

its not the keypad, its the main display light, sorry i wasnt so clear. ie. today while i was waiting for the bus, i was using the phone (it was quite chilly) and the display was dim-no backlight (the keypad was on). 5 minutes later i was in the bus it came back on by itself :?:

I had exactly the same problem this morning. It was snowing (sleeting) and was really rather bl**dy cold. Heard an SMS come in but couldn't read it due to the back light not turning on and bad light.

Arrived at work, grabbed a coffee... in the meantime, my backlight decided to start playing again!

thats another case of this mysterious syndrome, is this a good reason to complain and get it fixed/replaced or should we just put it in our warm pockets and forget about it?

I must admit, I was ready to take the handset back to the shop before I noticed it working again... Then I saw this thread... If it is a general fault (feature) with this model, I'd be loathed to loose my C500 just because of this.

Happened again this morning (07/02/05)...

Usual routine, cycle to work with phone in pocket, headphones in, tunes on... no light.

Arrived at the office, gave it a couple of minutes and it came back again.

Not sure if this is a 'by design' feature, or a harware failure or firmware bug...

I just hope I never need to use my phone when it's cold and dark.

ive also noticed backlight wont come on depending on the severity. a bit cold..like on a desk -backlight will take 2-3 sec before coming on: -cold outside -it may take up to a minute or two

Hi

i recieved my c500 a few days ago. and i have exactly the same problem. i realized that in the last ROM upgrade there was a backlight fix but my phone was already supplied to this release. I really cant see why the cold is affecting the backlight on my phone. sounds wierd but it really is happening. im gonna pop to my local orange shop today and see if they can give me any answers. if they can then i shall update.

Any news on this? Maybe its why I'm getting problems with my c500 and the backlight.

Humm people - I noticed mine freezes every so often - so i can't do anything on it. And once in a blue moon have the no back light problem. Don't think its the cold.

Does the phone have an Idle process? i.e like when you leave your computer doing nothing windows takes the opotunity to delete some rubbish - move stuff around and tidy up. Wondering if the phone does this and gets a little stuck, when you suddenly want to do something.

Or perhaps something isn't releasing the processor for the next job.

anytime i've had freezing and backlight problems is when the phone has been really busy i.e trying to do stuff after boot up. or when too many apps are open.

are we merely confusing our phones?

No, I don't think so. I haven't used the phone much all day and it was fine, as soon as I started walking home from work and went outside the backlight refused to come on. I'm getting real pissed off about this now.
