Guest batha Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 Been searching through the forums and it seems like a lot of people edit .xml to edit homescreens. Is that what the majority of the desingers here do? I have noticed quite a few people suggest to pick apart other screens, make changes to the .xml and see how it works but it you don't know what you are looking at it could be a little confusing. Or do people use Ruttensoft? I have tried that software and it is simple/works well just seems like it may not be quite enough. Just looking to find how people go about the process and learning it. Design a screen on Photoshop, edit where the text goes, etc. Willing to learn, just want to find out the best way to start.
Guest drblow Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 Seriously, unless you have no idea of what code looks like, you'll quickly understand xml. Try opening up the xml from a theme you like & look at it. It should be fairly obvious which plugins do what. Change a few x & y values, change some font size, change the plugin height - then load it to your phone & see what happens. Have a look at the background images. It will become clear very quickly. & if it doesnt, you can ask somone here to clarify as you go. :D
Guest scott2eyes Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 Just looking to find how people go about the process and learning it. Design a screen on Photoshop, edit where the text goes, etc. Personally, I find it easier to get the "guts" of the homescreen working the way you want it first, then take a screenshot of where all the text etc. is, put that into Photoshop and build the graphics around it. Purely because it saves a lot of fiddling around (ie. "Right, I've got to move this bit left about 2 pixels, that bit down about 2 pixels, that needs to be smaller" etc. etc..) Obviously, it does help to have an idea of what you're aiming for in the first place, but it's much less frustrating when you realise that what you're trying to do isn't possible before you've designed the flashy graphics for it!

In my searching I come across this page at MSDN. It's helped me a lot in understanding what does what, as far as the different tags and plug-ins. I've already printed it and made a notebook with tabs that have the plug-in numbers for quick reference. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dn...2homescreen.asp HTH, Dale.
Guest batha Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 Thanks for all of the input. This forum is a great resource. The more I read the more I have to learn. Pobably my OCD :D Couple questions that maybe stupid and should probably read destes link first, but hey, I'm a newbie! What program do you guys prefer to use to open up xml? What program would you use to take a screenshot of where the text is? Thanks again.
Guest gpcarreon (MVP) Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 Hi :D What program do you guys prefer to use to open up xml? > XMLWriter. You can download a free trial from www.xmlwriter.net. The program can check for invalid tags so this one comes in handy for me as Im no expert on XML. What program would you use to take a screenshot of where the text is? > You mean take snapshots of the screen itself? I use SOTI's Pocket Controller Enterprise to 'project' phone screen to the PC then HyperSnap DX to capture window/control. Have a look at www.soti.net and www.hyperionics.com
