Viewing PPT slides on your Smartphone

Hi all,

I frequently give PPT presentations away from work, seminars etc. - I find that a last minute browse is enough to refresh my memory of the presentation I am about to give. I though my smartphone (SP3i) would be ideal for that purpose - of course the detail is very poor but for looking at the major bullet points and the order of the slides it is ideal - it is obviously better if your presentation consists of just pictures :D

I do not know of any PPT viewers, so I set about making my own using the minimum tools at hand (I don'thave the time to write a full blown application that takes PPT files and views them) ... I have created a "next best thing".

The viewer allows you to view one slide per screen and scroll backwards and forwards through a stack of slide images - either as one per screen or as a long vertical gallery to scroll through.

The viewer is written in html and javascript 1.1 and relies on the PPT presentation being exported to a series of JPGs/GIFs - one per slide.

There are a few steps to viewing the slides, as follows:

1. Open your PPT presentation as select FILE>SAVE AS, select JPG or GIF as FILE TYPE - click on SAVE ALL SLIDES when asked.

2. The slides are saved (where-ever you placed them) as a series of GIFS/JPGS with the format "SlideN.gif" or "SlideN.jpg" (for N=1,2,3 ...)

3. Copy the Files I have placed here: http://81.5.185.34/smartphone/SlideViewer onto your Smartphone (you can view them online but watchout for the GPRS costs!)

4. Copy the slides to the "Slides" subfolder.

5. Launch the "index.html" file and take it from there there ...

NB: Although you don't need to resize the images PPT gives you it is better to resize the slides to 176x132 format (I use IrfanView batch-convert an it it is done in a few seconds). I have left an example presentation in the "Slides" sub-folder in both GIF and JPG format so that you can see the difference.

It is not fancy at all but it does the job and it is great to browse my slides whilst the speaker before me is finishing off his :D

I hope this is useful for someone - do let me know your thoughts and if anyone has any mods to suggest/provide!

Yes, but that would be too easy wouldn't it! :D

$10 here and $20 there and it all adds up - its not a lot but like a lot of these little utilities I wouldn't use them *that* much to warrant purchasing them all

I did say I wanted a quick and dirty way didn't I!

Thanks for the link.
