smartnes save file problems on audiovox 5600

i have an audiovox 5600, and i downloaded smartnes 1.2. i also downloaded Zelda the rom file it is "zelda.nes". when i play it it runs fine but after i save and quit smartnes, when i go to play it again all i get is a black blank screen, there is sound so i know that it is running. so does anyone know how to fix this save file problem? because when i delete the sav files i can play it again no problem. but if the game is saved then it wont work! who wants to play zelda if you cant save its just too damn big! and english class is really boring! someone out there please help!
