Guest mismith356 Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 Hey Fella's... I like the forum and have been lurking around for a week or more now. Just thought I would register and say hey to all. I really like my new smt5600....read a fair amount before ponied up the $$ for a new phone and am really glad I did. While I like flip phones in principle (voice quality), I am SOOO glad I didn't get a close out sale mpx200 or even the newer 220. This smt5600 (c500 to alot of you right?) is just barely bigger than my SE T616 with so much more functionality. Things I've already done with it: --Ordered ATP 512 miniSD card (tomorrow delievery I hope :D ) --ripped some short movie trailers to optimised platback size with W.M.E --Installed Flux Challenge (great game till I dorked up the controls screen) --Had to install VMWare (w2k guest OS) on my fedora core 2 box at work just so I could sync my contacts in outlook...works pretty nicelt thank you! --Grabbed Beta Player .5 and pocketdivxencoder... I am sort of a gadget geek and like to tinker a bit...Suppose I am like most of you all here in that respect. Spent the late hours last night playing with VirtualDub and trimmed my Dr. Divx encodes of BattleStar Galatica, ran it thru pocketdivx and am really impressed. Can't wait till my new miniSD arrives cause I suspect pocketdix does a better job than WME and even though I will need an external app like beta player install, quality is king. Anyway...just wanted to say hi and share my enthusiasm...(hope I don't sound too boastful). Regards Mike
Guest chucky.egg Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 Hi Mike Welcome to the site There have been several posts like this in the last few days (which isn't a bad thing in any way) so it seems like the C500/5600/what-ever-name-yours-goes-by is really getting popular. Enjoy your new gadget and share your experiences!
Guest yoos Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 yea, welcome!!! Smartphones rock!!! As of right now, I don't think I will ever buy another phone unless it has the smartphone or pocketpc (aka windows mobile) OS's...

Guest HEKTIK Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Hi! Im also pretty new to this site and am also impressed with my new toy although not as impressed as I hoped to be before I got it. Sure ithe phone and OS are all good but it doesnt do anymore than my 6600 or P910i did - The outlook syncing is truly excellent though! Smartphone OS will eventually be the best but, at the moment, I feel its just a little behind Symbian. Once the (minor but numerous) bugs are sorted out and WM2005 is released things will be a lot better . Pocket Office would also be a damn nice help :D just my two cents :D
Guest Patrick TX Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 I just got my 5600 this week as well, dang good! The quality of this unit is MILES from my SE T616. I have added a few custom tones so far, as well as smart exporer. I am wanting to change the display up a bit, but there are so many choices. I'm not sure which one is the best for a 5600 running on AT&T. MSN, XP, Longhorn, etc. Any ideas?
Guest omar_g Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 It's a shame that some of the better handsets out there don't get released in the States. As great as the Typhoon is, I just think that for the time being, the latest itteration of Series 60 is so much better. If only you guys were upgrading from Nokia 6630's rather than Sony Ericsson T61X's! Ah well... I guess there has to be at least one area where the UK fares better than the US. That said, enjoy your new phones & welcome to the world of smartphones! :(
Guest mismith356 Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 (edited) Hey Omar, Yeah, as far as phones are concerned, I think Europe and the UK are much better off perhaps due to proximity to Asia? Or perhaps it's due to the fact the carriers are more willing to invest in the latest technology knowing their customers will actually pay for the equipment when made available. Pure speculation and a bit of a WAG...could be full of it too! As an example though, most everyone I know wants to get the handset for free from the carriers. Even if you have to get a 2 year contract to do it....most people are not willing to spend $$ on handsets. There are of course exceptions to this rule, but by and large, most folks want the smallest, badest ass phones with BT and MP cameras and not wanting to pay anything for them. It's like gas (petrol)....with 260 million folks here, people get pissed if it goes much above $2 a gallon. Everyone sort of feels entitled to cheap gas...cause we all require newish cars to get us to and from work (most americans live 20-30 miles or more away from where they work)....Gas goes up too much, we stop buying as many new cars....the car makers start screamin', they start to lobby congressmen, and pretty soon, we do some stupid crab like invading 4th world nations "cause it's the right thing to do"....and low and behold, gas prices go down....what's all this to do with smart phones...hell, I don't know... ....Anyway, I guess where I was headed is that when I was over inthe UK Oct 03 (if I recall correctly), you guys had 3g phones already. I couldn't believe it! Video on a phone...who would have thought! I may be wrong, but is it possible you guys and Europe don't mind paying for the technology much like the Japanese? Compared to us cheap asses here, who don't want to pay for our tech fixes....What reason to cell carriers have to bring the latest tech to our shores? Why would they want to give away the newest phones when it takes two years worth of $40 a month cell service to recoupe the equipment outlay? In a case like this, it seems economies of scale are working against us...if my theory hold water that is. In the end, I may be completly full of BS but at 2am it sounds reasonable to me  What do you all think? Edited February 8, 2005 by mismith356
Guest jporch316 Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 No - we dont pay for our handsets - we pay an absolute fortune for our petrol (gas to you) instead !!!
