Guest wills Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 Hey, I accidentally formatted the MMC card provided with my tomtom GPS. Can I replace it or preferably download the original software contents of the card somewhere and put it back on? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That would be a no. I would personally contact tomtom through their web site. I am sure if you registered your purchase / software they might be able to do something for you.
Guest ciderbob Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 no way, that sucks! Exactly what is on that card that makes it so special it cannot be copied? Have emailed tomtom, but they are sllooow to respond. Can the GPS actually function without this card?
Guest chucky.egg Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 It's their attempt at copy-protection I think I copied my original card onto my own mSD card, and it works fine, so theoretically you could copy the card onto anything (CD for example) as a backup. That might be a wise move in case my card ever gets squished. As for the GPS, yes it will work, but you have to have software on the phone to utilise it. If TomTom is still on your phone it'll still work, and equally it'll probably work the other way round (TomTom GPS with Mapopolis for example)
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 Exactly what is on that card that makes it so special Erm the entire tomtom application and maps, without the software on the card you cannot use tomtom.
Guest ciderbob Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 If TomTom is still on your phone it'll still work, and equally it'll probably work the other way round (TomTom GPS with Mapopolis for example) So let me get this straight, sorry for stating the obvious (if i am): I do not need the tomtom software on my phone or MMC card as long as I have mapopolis (or equivalent) installed and the tomtom hardware? Sorry for making this painful, I've only just got this E200, I'm used to having windows on my PC, not my phone. Now I can't use my new GPS since I have formatted a card that apparently I cannot replace! -argh! Thanks cB
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 As long as you have a GPS unit ie the TomTom one you can use it with other GPS software.
Guest TuurG Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 Now I can't use my new GPS since I have formatted a card that apparently I cannot replace! -argh! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Why not ask TomTom for a replacement? It's standard procedure for them. Just request a repair numberr, your MMC will be picked up, reflashed with all software and returned to you for free, in about 10 working days max.
Guest ciderbob Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 As long as you have a GPS unit ie the TomTom one you can use it with other GPS software. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks very much awarner, I will use mapopolis instead. However, on opening mapopolis and going "menu>GPS>GPS Status", then "menu>Start GPS" it just says "checking COM1:" and doesn't really do anything. I've tried it for about 5 minutes like that. I've also tried changing the port from auto-detect thru 1 to 9 under 'settings' with the same consequences and cant get any life out of it. Upon plugging in the TomTom unit goes first from flashing orange then to flashing green and the phone goes from battery to charge mode so I can't see anything physically wrong. Can anyone offer any suggestion? Hope someone can help. Thanks to all for helping so far, cB
Guest madferret Posted February 26, 2005 Report Posted February 26, 2005 Thanks very much awarner, I will use mapopolis instead. Why pay for another product, when you have legit TTM software that they will almost certainly replace for you? Of course, some would point you to the part of the user guide that says "back up the software on the card before using it". But that would just be mean... (Feeling smug 'cos the original TTM is copied to his PC AND a mini-SD card)
