Will current Smartphones be PTT compatible?

Just a general help really - am looking to buy a new smartphone (prob a C500, MPX220 (??!!) or a Jam) and have just watched a prog on Push to Talk which says that all UK networks will have this rolled out by the end of 2005.

I don't intend to change my phone for at least a couple of years but do really like the idea of PTT so wondering if this is functionality that can be added by software packages, ROM upgrades etc? I know that specific PTT phones have extra button etc to instigate the PTT functions but hopefully this could be covered by use of the Soft Keys or something?

The prog had reports from the US where PTT is massive and texting didn't take off, (90% of mobile users use PTT), wondered if people buying Audiovox/HTC products or MPX220's are missing out or are they set up for PTT?

Any advice/knowledge much appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks for the link but that is for push-email technology, not Push to Talk - this is where mobile basically become walkie-talkies by packaging up a few words and sending them off as data to be decoded at the other end - almost instantaneously.

In theory any Smartphone is capable of PTT, by installing PTT software, but when I tried it last (on a P900) there was no clear leader in the field, so there may be issues with compatibility until then.

I thought there was some PTT software for smartphones, but I can only find Agile Messenger 3

Ideally you want something that works across all platforms (so you can talk to friends with different handsets). Agile does seem to do that, but I haven't tried it personally
