C500 - is it THAT good?

I was browsing through a copy of What Cellphone (I think) this morning and saw that the C500 got their 'Phone of the Year' award?

Having been out of the MS Smartphone scene for a while, I just wanted to know is it really that good?

Even though my contract isn't up until July, I'd like to get a lie of the land. Plus, after the onslaught of HTC models in 3rd/4th quarter 2004, what is the state of play on new models this year?

Cheers

Morpheus is back! Wondered what had happened to you dude. Always enjoyed reading your perspective on how bad things were with the SPVs!

Yep, the C500 proved to be as good as we were saying that time you complained about us bigging up devices that hadn't been launched yet! Anyway, I chose to move to Pocket PC PE so don't have one but it's pretty obvious that the C500 is worlds better from the previous SPVs. They've had issues but that's not stopped the C500 finally winning the masses over as none of the previous Smartphones managed to.

Anyway, I'll leave someone who's actually used one for more then a day to tell you more...

ADDENDUM: Regarding models forthcoming, almost all are based on the HTC Typhoon (SP3, SPV C500) or HTC Feeler (SP3i, SDA, Xphone 2: apparently just a Typhoon in a different case including joystick - only 5 way I'm afraid). The MPX 220 that you probably remember was being touted as the holy grail for Smartphones proved to be something a turkey (although some on here would disagree - hey, if it's not good enough for the UK market that makes it a turkey). There have been other Smartphones on the horizon such as the Sagem My-S7 (which doubles as a Mitac Mio and is a candy bar 'phone WITH 8 WAY JOYSTICK) but they haven't materialised yet over here...

The reduced size & weight makes it a very attractive phone. There have been some niggles, the most obvious of which is the dust issue, but this has not been a problem with mine. Bluetooth is tricky to get working but the OS is very stable now and it takes a lot to crash the phone.

Heheh, I voted with my feet and got a Nokia 6600. Hush now all of you hissing in the background - it's what the E100 never was - a decent phone and a good smartphone to boot!

The only bugbear is that connectivity is fawking awful. In fact, I don't think I've synched it in months, so time to return to the MS fold.

I'm just amazed at the sea-change there has been between the E200 and the C500. Can it send MMS's to other networks and remember T9 stuff?

I was asking about future devices because, given the stillborn turkey the MPx220 has been, there's still no decent clamshell on the horizon?

The C500 is lightyears ahead of its predecessors, IMO.

It's small, it's light and it's cheap. All qualities you'd want in any phone, not just a Smartphone.

It's got some build-quality issues and it's starting to look a little dated now feature-wise, but it's still the best Smartphone on the market if you ask me.

Yes and yes to the mms and T9 questions (it's got a whole new t9 implementation, not the system used on previous spvs).

Afraid there's no clamshell Smartphones anticipated other then the MPX220 if it ever gets approved...

If the C500 is dated, what does that make the SE P910i? You can count the improvements of that over the P900 on 1 hand!

Goddamn, still no other clamshells on the viewscreen? Surely Orange is missing a trick there? Or are we likely to be blown away by a '3G MS Smartphone from Orangfe' announcement very soon?

Very unlikely I'm afraid...

I agree, they're both looking a little dated. Most phones are only on sale for around 6 months, because the phone market moves so fast, and the C500 has been around for about that length of time. Being dated doesn't necessarily make it a bad phone though.

Hopefully the C500 and P910 successors will both have 1MP+ cameras, wifi, 3G support, etc.

short answer: yes

it was time for upgrade, and i begrudingly got the new spv c500 because there was no other ms smartphone basically.. but god - its actually a fashion phone. people love it, it works, and the new T9 is great - it even tries to predict the last word of the sentence your typing!

Absolutely fantastic phone, that looks gorgeous (see it in the flesh - the pics dont do it justice).

Currently I use three phones, SPV C500, Nokia 6230 and a SE S700i , with the exeption of the s700i camera plus point, the c500 beats the rest hands down

Blimey, that told me! Will the C500 still rule the roost come July? ;-)

I'm back too after I ditched the E200. Now with a new C500 arrived today. I was amazed at the size compared to the older versions. Still playing at the moment.

Anyone have problems with signal strength? Really poor on Orange, my Nokia is much better.

Paul, stop dropping cryptic hints that make you appear to know more than the rest of us! Also, stop all this "cool car, cool snowboarder, life fully sorted" nonsense - just admit you're actually a spotty 15 year old typing in his mum's basement in Watford who has no friends or contacts and we'll all have more respect for you! Come on Paul, it's time to come out of the closet!

Don't mock the power of the ZX81!! I admit, the ZX-81 was a little before my time, but I definitely have some fond memories of a 48k Spectrum with rubber keys. 8 colours (only 2 per 8x8 pixel block or colour clash would happen), 5 minute+ loading times, and it was still the most fun you could have in a pre-teen bedroom! Add to this a year or so later, when the dicey power connection hit you and each second loading or playing a game became the more valuable because you never knew when (not if!) it would crash!

Happy days! Mind you, I'm still old enough to remember paying £120 to upgrade my Amiga A500 from 512Kb to 1Mb! Now, the same money will buy me a mini SD card a fraction of the size, but with over 2000 times the memory....

I feel really old now!
