Guest chucky.egg Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 I was thinking about getting PocketDVD, mainly because I'm lazy and can't be bothered with converting DVDs "by hand". But has anyone used this app, or got any suggestions for a "one click" DVD-to-Smartphone conversion tool?
Guest mavisdavis Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Its not so much a 1click app but did you knoe that Pocketdivx encoder can rip direct from DVD? All you do is select your dvd drive > choose the largest .vob file ( this is the main film) > then selct the output folder > click on add to list then select Advance options asnd choose the device you wish to convert to. It sounds alot but its not and I find it at least 4time quicker than the comercial programs on the market
Guest martin Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 PocketDVD looks quite good. I might give it a go when I've got time. I noticed their website is http://www.pocketdvd.ca/ All you do is select your dvd drive > choose the largest .vob file ( this is the main film) > then selct the output folder > click on add to list then select Advance options asnd choose the device you wish to convert to.This has never worked for me but I don't know if it's because the DVD's I'm using are encypted :?:
Guest Confused Stu Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I've never managed to use PocketDivXEncoder to rip straight from the DVD either. MavisDavis, have you been playing with the security settings on your DVD drive? I still use SmartRipper to get the film from DVD onto Hard Drive, then use PocketDivXEncoder to get it into the right format and size. I know you can buy one program to do both, but I'm far too tight to pay just to avoid pressing three buttons! :(
Guest mgama Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 I gave PocketDVD a try last night, and it didn't work for me. It created the AVI file, but that AVI file was unplayable on my PC using Windows Media Player. It did play in the Divx Player for Windows, but the time bar didn't work, and the size (width&height) wasn't what I specified in PocketDVD. Once transfered to my phone, it played at about 1 frame every 3 seconds. I suspect this was because of the size (width&height) being wrong, and the phone's processor couldn't scale/resize the video in real time. Does anyone know what makes this app a trial? I was expecting it to limit the video to 5 minutes or something like that... but from my one use of it, I didn't see any sort of limited functionality in it.
Guest mavisdavis Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Never touched the DVD setting on my drive as last time I tried I messed up the firmware trying to flash it. It a bog standard Pioneer 106Dvd writer. I have shown many people how to do this and they are all using Pocketdivx encoder now. If you want to rip the dvd have any of you tried DVDShrink (free again) that usually copes with encrypted dvds
Guest TigerNet Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 ...pocket dvd works fine for me...straight out of the box...
Guest flashback87 Posted February 13, 2005 Report Posted February 13, 2005 ...pocket dvd works fine for me...straight out of the box... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i've got the pocket dvd prog.... and i really liked it at first... however i've found just using windows media encoder w/ a few other programs(ok, i'll admit i'm pretty good w/ computers and this sorta stuff)... anyways with i've gotten MUCH MUCH MUCH better results using wmv versus divx... honestly i need to do some more test encoding with divx to compare them exactly, however i'm very happy using wmv the settings i use are Resolution 220x176(i think) Video: WMV 9 codec @ ~110kb/s Audio: WMA 9 @32kb/s mono Frame Rate: ~15fps(or w/e it automatically chooses under hte 'pocket pc' profile) Final file size usually ends up being ~100mb or so for an hour and a half anyways with those settings i've gotten video that is much better than anythign that the dvd 2 smartphone can do by far the one downside of this is WM encoder won't let you encode directly from VOB files(or atleast i haven't found a way yet), so your stuck ripping hte dvd, converting it to something like hi-res divx and then using wm encoder to get hte final version for your pocket pc, but if you already have a bunch of divx movies that you've got from mIRC or armadillo or something(legal of course  ) then its really easy, and i can't say for sure, but it seems like windows media stuff just preforms a lot better on smartphones since i guess mircosoft has done about all of the 'optimizing' or w/e that coudl possible be done
Guest mirpy1 Posted February 13, 2005 Report Posted February 13, 2005 ive got makamayas dvd to smartphone software off handango and i think its the beeze knees. As im new to all this smartphone stuff dont even know where to start so this does it all for me.
