Hi

Ive been trying to copy a 100mb mp3 to my c500 and every time it crashes and when i check the phone its frozen and even trying the start menu says its out of memory so i have to restart the phone to get it working again. Its not run out of space on the memory card because theres at least 400mb left so i guess the phone must store files transfered in its internal memory while theyre being copied and this is running out.

any ideas how i could transfer this mp3 across to my phone

cheers

The best way to transfer large files to your Storage Card would be thru a card reader.

Transferring large files takes ages if done with USb/active sync. During the transfer, the phone almost locks up, so perhaps it only seems that your phone is crashing?

Try this:

In the filemanager, choose systeminfo. Leave the screen open so you can see the free/used space on your storage card.

Copy the file and you can monitor your free/used-space go down/up. If the space-counter doesn't move, you indeed have a prob. If it keeps moving (although very slow), then just sit and wait:)

Large transfers do work - I've transfered over a 130Mb film once by USB and it went over OK (eventually). It took so long that I've always used a card reader since and never thought "Oh, I'm feeling lazy - I'll just use the USB". With the time that bugger took to get across, I'm not making that mistake again anytime soon!

I have never transfered files over 60MB but, a file of 50 to 60 MB takes as long as 5 to 7 minutes.

This is my first smartphone so I have nothing to compare with, but I don't think it's slow.

My laptop does have USB2, doný know for sure if the c500 has USB1 or 2 but maybe thats the difference?

Good luck

I'm guessing that the c500 is USB2 as when I transfer an MP3 from my laptop (usb1) it seems to takes ages, wheras my pc (usb2) only takes a few seconds

If you can still find a copy of the program SmartCopy (written by a Frenchman, I believe), that will be able to copy large files via the USB cable (although it'll still take a pretty long time). Unfortunately, his site appears to have gone down, but you might be able to find it still with a bit of searching. If not, I guess I could always upload the installation file, although I don't have it handy atm.

OK, to clear this up...

You can send large files to your C500 using ActiveSync, just drag it as any other file into the folder you want.

I currently have the full film Collateral (Tom Cruise) sitting in my phone.. Don't know why, I'll never watch the whole thing on my phone when I have TV and speakers i the house.. Oh yes I do know why... SOF.. (Show Off Factor) how many people do you know that can fit a full film onto their phones?? He hee. 1 for SmartPhones 0 for Symbian (and before someone points out 'SmartMovie' and other such programs, just a word. DON'T, I'm gloating here  )

Seriously though, that film was 200mb and took a little over 30mins to do, the ActiveSync progress bars go up a few notches then back to none, then again go up a few then back to none, don't be disheartened, it will work just wait..

(I tried first with the Paris Hilton vid, 100mb about 20mins, and that worked fine but it kept getting borrowed at work as the lads 'WENT FOR A DUMP'... Last laugh for me though.. None of them could work it. ha haaa)

Ive managed to transfer a 150+mb files to the sd card, sometimes it can take several tries. Try transferring it and dont use the computer for anything else during that time.

Seriously guys, if you're even thinking of getting a large memory card, or storing films on your phone, spend the extra fiver and get a memory card reader. It will speed things up beyond belief.

One way to look at it, even if you're only on £5 per hour at work, transfer 200Mb or more via a card reader rather than the USB and you've saved yourself enough time that the reader's paid for itself!
