Reception Antenna / Repeater

So I am on the road a lot and want to trick out my car with a boosted signal for my phone (MPX-220).

I have seen websites that advertise "repeaters" which are installed into the car, plugged into the battery, and basically boost the signal from an external antenna into the inside of the car. It makes sense on paper.

My question is, has anyone actually tried one of these? Do they work as advertised? What product(s) would you recommend?

Also, do I have to be careful about which one I pick up? I have Cingular (in the US) and it certainly needs to be compatible with their system.

I've not tried a booster but networks in the UK sell desktop versions
