Guest Southwestwall Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 In an amazing burst of irony,  a PC is the ideal modem for the SPV... although the concept is arse-about-face :? the SPV doesn't appear to be the ideal modem for a PC ;)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 heh, i was talking to a colleague before xmas about his xda and bluetooth. He was trying to convince me how useful it was to be able to browse the internet on his xda through wireless lan while at home. I would have thought it kind of defeats the object if you are at home, near to a pc anyway. Pass through internet access on the spv is also something of a mystery. Why would you need to use it, other than for e-mail maybe?
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 Pass through internet for downloading updates and applications direct to the phone (rather than copying or installing through activesync). Basically just your high data stuff where you use the data later. No browsing while plugged in cos you can use your PC. What I'd like to see is some downloading pages of the internet while docked thing for later handheld reading (especially for tube travellers who ahve no reception underground). Something like AvantGo. This is what pass through style connections are perfect for.
Guest Southwestwall Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 That would be more than useful - an offline browsing facility, like full IE. I store useful pages for offline use on my PC, so why not on the SPV? Maybe because it will be more profitable to screw users when the GPRS promotion runs out... However, there is a kludge that can be used, where you save web pages in IE on your PC and load the html files into the SPV. Then they can be read offline... You can also convert MS Office docs to html (e.g. Word files) and view them on the SPV. But html viewing will require either: All-Explorer SPE to find and open the file or creating a local URL for the file and storing it in the SPV Favourites folder. Oh, and .txt files can be read on the SPV too.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 At the very worse you can create a shortcut in your start menu before you undock the phone. But I agree an offline browseing option would make good use of a passtrhrough connection
