Hi,

Quick question - can anyone tell me if TomTom navigator (Smartphone edition) can be used off-line as a mapping tool when a GPS connection is unavailable?

Thanks,

Paul

It can but without the GPS it becomes a little pointless. The maps are very detailed but nothing compared to a OS map for example.

New version (TTM5) can be used when waling but not 'off road' i.e. Hill Walking. OS do a programme for this. I believe it works on PDAs not sure about Smartphones tho'

There is Outdoor Navigator which is designed for walking and boating etc but this is only available in the US at the moment.

Cheers for the replies - I will probably be investing in a GPS reciever at some point so was mainly wondering if it was worth looking at getting and using the TomTom software off-line in the meantime.

I will look into the OS maps too - thanks for the pointer!

One more quick question if i may: how much does tomtom over gps cost to use?

I understand that the phone connects to the GPS reciever via bluetooth which is obv free. Apart from a TomTom subscription how much does the GPS connection cost to use - is it charged in a similar way to GPRS or does it form part of the subscription package?

Sorry I'm a bit clueless when it comes to GPS! In addition, do you recommend a particular GPS reciever (apart from the one shipped with the software)?

Many thanks.

After buying TTM the only cost is if you subscribe to TT Traffic a meager €49 per year. You dont have to sub however, so its free if you dont.

And the only way to buy TT Mobile is to buy it with the bluetooth GPS unit so you don't need to get a seperate unit.
