Guest blobby Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I have heard references that it's possible to set a http proxy for PIE via registry settings but no amount of searching seems to through up exactly how to do this. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this? The reason I ask is because I've recently been messing with an app called webcleaner. After a bit of hacking with python I've got the compression and image reduction modules going. From my initial messing it seems HTML gzipping and converting images to low quality jpegs seems to result in a 66% reduction in bandwith used overall, though this may get better on poorly optimised or ad heavy sites as it can also filters banner ads etc. So far I can only see a use for it when using the laptop with gprs, as that seems to really add up even when browsing w/o images, but if I can get round the proxy it should be useful for the phone too. IE will need to support proxy authentication as that's the only way I can really safeguard the proxy from being open to the world.
Guest blobby Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Ok got a bit further by setting a proxy connection from "The Internet" to "Work" and setting up IE to use "Work" as its connection. Only problem.....it doesn't use the username and password I supplied for the proxy in the settings so I just get an error from the proxy. Help!
Guest fraktal Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 (edited) it doesn't use the username and password I supplied for the proxy in the settings so I just get an error from the proxy.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hmmmm...I don't think that's what it is. My proxy doesn't require a username or pass but it still returns an error.... ](*,) Bizzarrely I just started to try and do the same thing today. I don't understand what al this "work" and "the internet" means (in this context, in real life I know what the internet is  ) I'll let you know if i get any further. It then works fine but isn't ideal because the proxy is then open to whole world, though I might at least limit it to the orange subnet. The "Work" connection I just used because it was there and wasn't using it, though I suppose it's meant for things like VPN. I presume it works because by setting up a proxy from "The Internet" to "Work" you're creating a pathway that the system can work out. When you then set IE to use network "Work" it thinks the only way of getting pages is through the proxy, though the proxy connection in itself is over the internet. I'd be a bit simpler if this could just be set in IE like you would with a normal browser but it seems to work apart from the lack of authentication. Wonder if there's going to be a mobile version of firefox :( Edited February 17, 2005 by blobby
