tomtom gps not working on spv e200?!

Hey people of modaco,

A friend has given me a spv e200 complete with tomtom mobile gps. It doesn't seem to come with any software although I have a copy of mapopolis which I have installed.

When plugging in the TomTom unit to the car cigarette lighter and phone, it goes first from flashing orange then to flashing green and the phone goes from battery to charge mode so I'm assuming theres nothing physically wrong there.

Upon opening mapopolis and going "menu>GPS>GPS Status", then "menu>Start GPS" it just says "checking COM1:" and doesn't really do anything. I've tried it for about 5 minutes like that. I've also tried changing the port from auto-detect thru 1 to 9 under 'settings' with the same consequences and cant get any life out of it.

Can anyone offer any suggestion?
