oh you lifesaver!!

Just had this problem on my C500 and that CAB file fixed it nicely - cheers!

(So it must have been something to do with a homescreen or something then? I wasn't sure if my volume was actually changing without showing the volume bar or whether the buttons just weren't working???)

i had this problem too... unfortunately i didn't had that .CAB you used so I've dig into the problem myself...

It resides in the fact that some homescreens are replacing the standard bitmaps used to show various functions (like the volume, in call, confirmations, questions, etc), with some bitmaps of their own. It is not a real replacement, but just change some keys in the registry to point to other locations for the new bitmaps. You can check in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\RAI. For volume, you'll find something called :VolDlg and under it, a value that points to the location of the bitmap to be used (BKBitmapFile). If you remove the homescreen, the bitmap used by that homescreen is gone but sometimes the registry key remains unchaged, thus pointing to a nonexistent file. The only thing to do is to change the value to point at the original bitmap that is "\windows\volume.gif" (without hypens). This is also true for some other controls.

NOTE: Be very careful when changing the registry keys. If you're not used with such things, better ask a friend who knows how to do it.

regards,
