Guest bnoc Posted February 21, 2005 Report Posted February 21, 2005 Using a POP based email account on my home PC it is possible to set it up so that once a particular email has been received by my PC it is removed from the host server. The result being that if you press 'send/receive' again only if you have been sent a new email does anything get downloaded from the server. My problem is this: There doesn't seem to be any way of setting up my M2000 to act in the same way. When logging on using WiFi or USB to a network this isn't a major problem. However when connecting through GPRS I'll be damned if I'm paying Orange to download each and every email I've ever been sent! Now I know that I could get around this problem by setting up my email account on my desktop pc too and simply checking the email from there thus downloading them from the server but this isn't what I want to do. I want to have a truely mobile office such that I can run my whole business from the mobile phone. Please somebody help me solve this problem. It makes me want to  Barry
Guest Chaser81 Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 I was all ready to post saying "Here, this is how you do it!", so utterly convinced was I that you could do this, but upon investigation of my PPC, I cannot find the setting anywhere on my device either! I did a Google search and couldnt find an answer either! I am assuming that if the built in mail client doesnt support this, then a third party program might, so maybe do some investigating on Handango. Alternatively, as a work around, you could set the email client to download the full copy of your email instead of just the header, and there is an option for "Only download mail from the last * days" which you could muck about with to only get recent mail without all the extra gumf.
Guest RussellH Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Something else I've been wondering about POP3 on the M2000. With Outlook on a PC, it's possible to filter e-mails containing certain words, so that junk e-mails get sent to a different folder or even deleted. I can't see an option to filter on the M2000. Does this mean that all the spam e-mails I get arrive in my M2000 POP3 inbox?
Guest Chaser81 Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 (edited) Yeah, there's no spam filter unfortunately on it. Its a VERY cut back version of the outlook email client on the PC. There are more advanced alternatives on the PPC. Try this: Click here EDIT: My original link direct to the program didnt work so above is a link to Handango. Do a search for "Pocket Spam Filter 2003". Its a neat little program with powerful spam filters for the Pocket PC. Edited February 25, 2005 by Chaser81
Guest bnoc Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 @RussellH: SPAM isn't an issue as I only use the email address in question as a response to targetted advertising that I do for my Mobile Phone Billing Consultancy (Tariff Scout) so when I start getting SPAM I just stop advertising with that address and start using a new one :-) @Chaser81: I too thought that I'd be able to find an answer really quickly, but nothing was forthcoming :-( I did search Handango but to no avail. If you, or indeed anybody else, is able to find a solution then I'd really appreciate it. I really hope that my original theory, that the networks set the phone up this way to increase the level of GPRS charges they can make, isn't correct!!! However I guess that its this sort of business practice that keeps me in business! Barry
Guest fraser Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Give up on POP, what you are trying is a hack. Try to get an IMAP email account somewhere, and it poll your POP accounts if you want. It keeps your messages on the server always and each client is has a cached copy. When you delete or mark an email as read on one PC, it will be deleted or marked read on all hosts. I've got Outlook on my phone set to keep a copy of only the last seven days.
