M2000 WiFi - Or Should I call it NoFi ?!?

This is a different problem so I thought I'd put it in a different thread; well made sense to me :-)

For some reason I cannot get my M2000 to work with my home WiFi network and its slowly driving me to madness! I know that the phone works just fine as I have used it in the wireless zone in my university library with no problems. I also know that my wireless router is working as I am typing this thread on my laptop sitting in the living room with not a wire in sight!

Now I'm not exactly what you'd call a technical whizzkid so I'm gonna my hand held through this.

I have a Linksys Router but then I'm sure that won't be enough info to help you help me.

Do you have any encryption turned on at home? What exactly happens when you try to connect? Does it list the home AP at all, but just now work?

Posted

Cheers for the reply ;-)

It (the M2000) recognises the home network and you can tell it to connect to it. However this is where it goes wrong :-(

The M2000 says that it is connecting but then it just flicks back to 'Available' instead of connected.

WiFi is generally one of my frustrations with the M2000. For example at this moment it is showing no less than five available WiFi networks. This doesn't seem so strange except for the fact that apart from my home network and one of my neighbours networks my PC can't see any of them and I know that one of them is over half a mile away and clearly not actually available! It doesn't seem to refresh very frequently and when it does it it simply lies!

Help; please!

Does sound like you have encryption on. You see the AP and you ca sort-of connect, but won't actually allow data to pass. If you go to the network list, select your home one and put in the key. Also check the authentication settings, most likely you aren't using any and need to switch it off on the phone.

How does your PC get an IP address? Does it get one from the WiFi router?

Okay Fraser now you've lost me I'm afraid

If I've figured out how to attach things to posts correctly there should be a screen shot of how my phone is currently set up within the Network Key tab. If you can give me an idea of where I've gone wrong it would be appreciated. I never entered anything in the 'Network Key' box so whatever is there must have been done by the network (I guess).

When I set up the two PCs in my house to work with the router I just installed the software and plugged the network cards into the spare slots at the back. I never entered any form of key for them. I guess, now that I think about it, that probably leaves my network open to access by anybody nearby! As you can probably tell I'm not all that hot with the technical side of things :-(

Cheers in advance for any further help.

Cool, from what I understand, you have two PCs at home running off the same broadband connection. Because you also didn't mention picking IPs for them, I'm assuming that your router does DHCP for you, and that is is in fact a router and not just a plain Access Point (like mine). All that is a mechanism where the IP address is chosen for you, and it just works. Nice and easy. In theory!

So, we need to figure out if this part is working. If it doesn't, nothing else will work. Download a free util called vxUtil, go to Functions/Info. Scroll down to the bottom and there should be a section for your wireless. If you can, cut & paste this section when the connection is up as best as it gets. If cutting and pasting isn't an option, just tell me the IP and the subnet, they are the most important.

It might also be helpful if you could find out the IP address of one of the PCs. It will most likely be 192.168.X.X. When all this is working, the phone should have a similar one, with the last part being different (over simplifed version!).

Cheers for your help on this.

IP = 169.254.251.151

Subnet = 255.255.0.0

I know this shows just how little I understand about this stuff but I don't even know how to go about finding the IP Address of one of our PCs!!!

Cheers again for your help,

Barry

To find out the IP and also the MAC address of PC, then click Start==>Program==>Accessories==>command prompt

A dos like window will open.

Type

ipconfig /all

then enter

A complete set of the current ip as well as the physical address of your hardware will be given. This will help if you have setup hardware access filtering on your wifi router.

I have noticed from your screenshot that this feature is not enabled on the M2000.

The problem with the wifi could be as simple as one of the previous posts has suggested. If you have setup encryption, either WEP (64bit or 128bit) or WPA then you will need to enable this on your M2000. And then manually set the password. WEP 128bit password contains 28alphanumeric charaters. The passkey will not generally work. You must input the correct characters to access the network.

Wot he said! Basically, the 169 address you are getting is a "fall-back" address that Windows PCs use if they can't get an IP the usual way. So, your phone can see the AP, but can't really communicate with it, other than "hello, I'm here!!".

Baking Powder? Exsqueaze me?

I'm sure you guys are gonna get mighty frustrated with me soon as I am, yet again, completely lost!

I ran the ipconfig/all from the command prompt and got the attached screenshot in reply. At the time I ran it our network was set up as follows:

3 desktop PCs & 1 laptop. 2 Desktops and laptop turned on (don't know if that makes a difference). 1 desktop connected to linksys WiFi router through Linksys WiFi network card and the other connected via ethernet cable directly into the router. The laptop is also connected to the router wirelessly but using its inbuilt wireless thingummyjig. My M2000 at this time is connected to the desktop PC (the one hardwired into the router) via its USB cradle.

As you say it could be as simple (who am I kidding pretending I think this is simple) as having set up some form of encryption but I don't remember doing it?!? So that we can cut the encryption theory out of the equation could you advise me on how to go about finding out if encryption is enabled and how to find out what the password is or how to go about changing it.

Again any help would be appreciated,

Barry

OK, going by the screen shot, yes you do have DHCP enabled. So, the 169 address indicates that the network is not talking. I notice your PC has a network card that you aren't using; see how it also has the same 169 type address?

Finding out encryption; well it's XP you have, so it's likely you are using the in-built wireless stuff. Go to Control Panel, Network Adapters and find the wireless one. Right-click on it and do properties, in here you should find the encryption settings. Don't change anything as it all works for you; we only want to much around with the SPV.

When you installed it all, did it make you a disk to take around all of your PCs? That might have done the encryption for you.

If you are sure that the encryption is not activated, then you should then check that the correct SSID is found. If this is not, then you maybe trying to conncet to a wireless network that is no longer in range or that is encrypted and you do not have the passkey.

The other thing to bear in mind is if you have selected a channel that someone else in using in the local area, then there could be conflict here too. The smaller antenna of the M2000 is not as good as that for a PC or notebook, as such it would have a problem connceting to this channel. Suggest changing to a different channel.

Hi All

Just found this thread whilst searching the net for inspiration because my brand new (as in today) M2000 would not connect on WiFi properly. It also kept saying home network connected, then switch to available; it even said that WiFi was being used when in the WLAN Manager. But nothing happening.

Was reading these posts out loud to other half - who also couldn't understand why it wouldn't work - when he had a bingo! moment. Apparently he hadn't added the MAC addess to our router. Yup, seems a simple thing but one he had completely overlooked. However, getting the MAC address off the M2000 is not easy, as there is nothing anywhere that we found that will tell you.

What we did find was a programme on the net that once installed on the phone, will give you this info: vxipconfig

As soon as we had this info in the router, bingo, wifi up and running beautifully.

I have to say that Orange couldn't have been more helpful - they were on the phone for an hour going through the various possibilities with me. I love this phone, its a beaut.

HTH anyone who may be in the same boat.

Wow, kudos to the phone newb for searching!! When I first saw your post, I thought to myself, damn, not another person asking the same old questions that had already been answered! Refreshing to see someone who actually tried to sort it themselves, then posted advice for others.

Welcome to the site!! :D

Hi,

I was reading all the posts, and this seems the place to be re: connecting the spv m2000 to a wireless network.

Here goes.

I have a wireless network installed in my house (connect via a Belkin ADSL wireless modem router). The SPV m2000 finds the network and connects to it but i cannot use the internet on the phone.

My network uses mac address filtering, 128 bit WEP encription etc.

I have input my WEP encryption keycode into the phone and done everything i know, but i still can't access the internet on my phone.

Normally when i connect a new computer to my network, i have to lower the firewall and it then appears as a DHCP client, and then i add its address to the MAC address filtering before putting the firewall back up. I have tried this with the phone, but the router won't find my phone and put it in the DHCP client list.

I have even added my phones MAC address to the router manually, but still no joy!

I add new computers and laptops to my Belkin network all the time.

I am just stumped with this SPV M2000

Hope someone can help before i totally lose my sanity and destroy my SPV M2000

Thanks

If you can, switch off encryption for 10 minutes and try to get it to work. If you aren't getting a DHCP address, a problem with encryption is the usual suspect. Once you have eliminated that, turn it back on and try again. If it still doesn't work with encryption off, something else is broken.

Oh, and ensure that EAP is off (on the phone) if you are not using it.
