email on homescreen

i have been searching for awhile and i cannot find a way to have my email alert on the homescreen like sms does. i have seen custom homescreens with the feature so i know it exists!

The e-mail alert appears in the icon bar by default. If you are referring to an e-mail counter, here is an example of some xml that displays a counter on the homescreen.
