Guest mantrac Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 I recently visited various South-East Asian countries, roaming with my SPV. I have had international roaming switched on by Orange for a good few years now and have never had any problems. Not the case with the SPV I'm afraid... I was surprised to find that at times, my SPV would lock up during startup and ask for the SIM unlock code... Two or three reboots later and it would decide to forget about it and let me get on with my normal use of the phone!! This has so far happened in Thailand, Vietnam and Dubai (surprisingly enough, not in Cambodia). Besides this being a serious bug as far as roaming is concerned, it is also interesting how all of a sudden the phone unlocks itself and continues working fine!!! Also, whereas there's no GPRS roaming agreement with Thai networks, the white G block came up all of a sudden on New Year's eve and stayed on for a good 10 or 12 hours... Shame I was too *tipsy* to care finding out if I had GPRS data access or not...
Guest Cent Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 I went to South Africa over Christmas and had exactly the same problem as you. The unlock code was requested several times until finally it stopped doing it. I also had the problem upon returning in the UK. On top of that with roaming switched on the phone became very unusable. Very slow, finding problems with the automated e-mail receiving etc. It may be worth raising these issues and moving this thread onto the buglist.
Guest coolcatshaft Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 I took mine to india and had no such problems. it did ask of the sim unlock code but only when putting an indian network sim in it without the charger trick. had lots of problems manually selecting networks though! i also got the G symbol and was surprised cos none of the indian networks currently offer GPRS (in fact most of them should soon be switching from GSM to CDMA2000) and thought i'd give GPRS a go, but it just kept the waving windows logo in the corner but wouldnt load any pages. did u guys get the white triangle in the status bar when roaming?
Guest mantrac Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 did u guys get the white triangle in the status bar when roaming?Certainly did... But this is a pretty standard icon...
Guest Cent Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 Yes got the roaming sign too. Its normal. However I am wondering why you didnt get the question for the unlock code. It may have to do with GPRS being available on the other networks but our network not allowing it. I certainly know that both networks in SA support GPRS but neither was available for Orange Roaming.
Guest johnsoanes Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 My phone was working fine in the UK. I arrved in Hong Kong and after turning it on it stuck on the Orange startup Screen and refused to go any further. Despite numerous reboots it just wouldnt start. I was forced to do a hard reset.
Guest coolcatshaft Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 same here! a week into my backpacking travels around north india one morning the phone stuck on the orange startup screen and refused to go any further. I too had to resort to a hard reset! losing all my numbers/details etc in the process! been fine since then though! Cent, re: GPRS only one of the many networks i used in india brought up the G symbol, the rest didnt, but none of them asked me for the sim unlock code, probably for the best as i cant remember what i set anyway! ;)
Guest neilg Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 I must admit I didnt post htis previously but I had the phone asking for PUK1 (simunlock code) when I was roaming in italy and again once I returned. Panic'd me a bit but then I remembered i was running Microsoft and did the time honoured poweroff-on (I miss ALT+CTRL+DEL). On pwering back up the phone would start with the radio off and you had to turn it back on again. After that the phone was fine for a bit - the error seem to occur in italy when the phone tried to roam onto a diffreent national network and re-register for example TIM-Omnitel. Still doesnt explain why after being turned off for the plane journey home the thing fell over with the same error after finding the home network. That said it put up with lots of abuse as I am a terrible snowboarder it was subected to freezing cold and the screen didnt die and I landed on it 1001 times and it still worked!
Guest be.max Posted January 19, 2003 Report Posted January 19, 2003 I'm italian and I work in Swiss, so i purchase a SPV that work fine in Swiss but in Italy it doesn't work in any case. With my italian sim ask to me the unlock code immediately, and I knew, but the real problem is that the spv ask the same code also i roaming mode.
Guest Wlodek Posted January 19, 2003 Report Posted January 19, 2003 So to be, er, more positive, what do I do when I go to Italy and it asks for simunlock code? I am actually going in Feb. ... :? Shall I: - ask for the PUK1 in advance, but will Orange let me have it? - if it locks up, just do the battery-out - battery-in reboot? - take my trusty Nokia with me instead? Yours, Confused in Cumbria P.S. I admire the fact that you can do the snowboarding on the SPV (as in sitting on it)? I'd rather have a working phone though.
Guest ajb3000 Posted January 19, 2003 Report Posted January 19, 2003 The PUK code changes every 30 minutes so asking for it in advance would be no use whatsoever. I'm in the same situation in going to Moscow in Feb, and I may take my Nokia along *just in case* (i.e. take both phones and use the SPV if it works). On another note, does MMS work abroad?
Guest be.max Posted January 19, 2003 Report Posted January 19, 2003 until now i think there are two possibilities: 1) ask to orange tha unlock code 2) use the battery trick if you want I can update you for the italian situation
Guest Wlodek Posted January 19, 2003 Report Posted January 19, 2003 Many thanks for explaining the temporary nature of PUK, I wasn't aware of that. Regarding MMS abroad - there are lists on the Orange Website - all I can do is trust them for now. Regarding updates on the Italian sitiuation - would be useful, but do you have a UK SPV (I do)? Apparently they are not all the same for some obscure reason. I'll take my 8310 with me just in case I think, it's only a little thing and has been to Italy with me before, so it will enjoy the trip. Cheers, W. (lesss confused now thanks to trusty MoDaCo community, but still in Cumbria)

HMm, that is a bit odd... ive been to Dubai, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and Australia over the last year and ive never had any problems with my SPV acting up... I cant comment on the GPRS however as i never use it.
Guest fozzie Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 That's an apt user name ;) The text in the post is from over 15 months ago!! This has to be the record for the oldest revived thread :D The SPV used to have this problem when it was first released. The poster before you has just quoted from the original old post but not actually said anything himself! Just noticed that they did change the title to ask "What's the charger trick?". IIRC, it used to involve taking the battery off with the phone on and with the charger still connected and swapping the SIM to a local one - which would then be accepted. It was a way of getting around the SIM lock. It's not related to the bug where the phone asked for an unlock code when roaming.
