Guest dgwilcox Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 The past few months, I've installed homescreen theme files (as .hme files). Later I've deleted some of these themes by tossing the .xml files in storage/application dat/home/. Most of the time this works fine. Some of these removed homescreen theme files show in the "remove programs" setting, but they cannot be removed "...could not be removed from your phone." Using a file explorer and a registry editor on the phone and on the PC, I'm able to locate the files in question, but they can't be modified or deleted. The theme files are listed as folders in storage/windows/appmgr/ with .tmp files inside - they won't delete. The same theme files show up as folders in the registry under hkey_local_machine/security/appinstall/. Inside those folders are three files: (default), role and uninstall (probably why they're showing up in "remove programs." None of those files can modified nor deleted, "access denied" on the PC, "value cannot be deleted" on the phone. I've also tried to re-install the theme files in question, thinking I could then remove them via "remove programs," but they won't re-install. So, I'm kinda scratching my head. I haven't been able to find a similar situation in the forums or searching on the web. If anyone has some thoughts, it will be most appreciated. Thanks, - Dean ................... Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 You should never just delete files otherwise as you haev found you will get problems, not only visible ones but also registry alterations that may cause you problems later on. One thing you can do is to rename the file extension to .jpg for example then reboor the phone. You should now be able to delete the files in question after the phone reboots.
Guest dgwilcox Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 Thanks for the help. Yes, experience is the best teacher. I won't make this mistake again. I had previously tried to rename the .tmp files, but it won't work. I have tried to send, move, cut, compress, change properties, etc. Quite simply, I have not been able to modify the .tmp files any way. The same goes for the corresponding registry keys.
