POP Mail Downloads

Hi Guys. My SPV M2000 Downloads my POP Mail from G-Mail in full but when I try to download it on Outlook its does not show up. Also When I set my M2000 to sync it deletes the mail i've downloaded from POP??? Does anyone experiance similar problems??...or even better Does anyone know how to fix it??

Its a problem with Gmail, once the mail is read, it tends to get deleted on thier server, and as far as I can recall there isnt a fix at present... tested both on smartphone and Ppc.

You sure on that jfran? When gmail first launched, I had a look through how it worked. I was under the impression that gmail has two areas, a current one and an archive one. When you download via POP, it should move the mail to the archive one. Check the gmail FAQs, there's a section on POP that explains it.

I may be wrong, this is just from memory and it was months ago!

Seems to make sense, but then again havent used pop on gmail since first tested back in december since that archiving feature makes access via the phone's client not very useful for one on the move with no proper gmail pc access.

The problem is that POP wasn't designed for this kind of thing, and anything you do do is only ever at best a nasty hack.

If you are serious about accessing mail from more than one place (not webmail), then you need either IMAP or MS Exchange (belch!). You can get IMAP accounts online, and they keep all your mail on the server. Or, if you have broadband, set up your own server and have unlimited storage space. Gmail breaks the mold with 1GB? Bah, I've had 160GB for the past five years!!! ;)

Does gmail offer IMAP, im using that instead of pop for another account, its awesome for your phone as you can read them and then download via pop to outlook whenever your at home.

Google are one of the more obvious candidates for IMAP. IMAP costs more as each user needs a fair amount of space on the server but Gmail already offers this. However, the server load for IMAP is also higher than POP as you connect to read/delete mail etc as opposed to hitting a POP box a few times a day. Maybe that's their logic.

I just run my own on my broadband using a linux box. 1 Gb storage? Bah, try 240 gig, I've not deleted a mail in years (diskspace is cheaper than time) ;)
