I'm fairly pessimisatic I have to say, about the potential this film has to make a mockery of the utter, utter, utter, utter (etc etc) GENIUS that is hhgtg.

Lets face it, when has hollywood ever made anything better than the original? And hitch hikers is just so good in it's original form that it would be fairly hard to top it anyway. The appaling 1970's effects in the original BBC TV series are a part of the magic for me, and to be honest I'm expecting the hollywood version to be a lamer script, lamer acting, and better special effects. They'll probably put in fight scenes, and have Arthur Dent played by Arnie, and in his dressing gown he actually has seventeen mega-blasters! :D

I'm actually looking forward to this....im eager to see what they do with it. i thought the books were pretty awesome, and was very sad to hear when Adams died.

Yes, I never realised Adams extent as a writer until I read 'Salmon of Doubt' which, of course, was released posthumously. Up until then I figured him as clever and funny guy that that only wrote books occassionally. How wrong was I!

I agree that the film probably won't be as good as the book - they never are - but it may do it justice. Apparantly the script was worked on by Adams because talk of a film has been around for many many years. Although you never know what H'wood may have added or taken away. Still worth a look tho. I have watched the Star Wars prequels, thought them crap, but will prob see the third when it comes out. Though I drew the line at the third Matrix film.

The script was apparently developed by Adams before his death, and there seems to be a lot of British actors involved in it, so dont write it off just yet... The trailer is very funny.

Hitchikers and its humour is something quintessentially British, and there is a massive fear that an Americanised version is going to mess with all of that. But getting Stephen Fry as the voice of the book is great, plus Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin is another reason not to think the worse...

A lot of Americans like 'British' humour that is why Monty Python and The Office are so successful over there. It will only be a problem if they have tried to make HHG understandable to 'middle' America because they can't even tie their shoelaces.

Luc's Rant.

i noticed a few days ago a trailer for "the new film" hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and it made me angry in a very special kind of way.

HGTG is my very favourite series of books of all time. i have read them more times than i can remember and at this very moment i am re reading so long and thanks for all the fish.

When will hollywood stop? why can't they just leave things alone? they have completely desecrated so many classics like the Italian Job, Alfie, thunderbirds, I Robot (don't get me started on I Robot) blues brothers2000 (what the hell was that all about???!!?)

I was talking to the son of a friend of mine(he's 15) when i said that i didn't particularly want to see the new Alfie because it was bound to be a horrendus rip off of the origional. not only did he not know there was an origional, when questioned further he didn't even know who micheal caine is. DAMMIT!!!

these "new" films are being thrust upon people, children, animals if you like, who have no idea that these are desparate attempts to make a classic film a blockbuster by adding a few special affects and some young heartthrob actor for the ladies.

anyway... as for this hitch hiker film, i saw a trailer for it and maybe i'm confused but it looked as if Zaphod had only one head?? please correct this if i'm wrong. in the 30 seconds i saw of this trailer i noticed straight away maybe 30 things that shouldn't have been there and about the same number of things that should have been there but weren't.

thousands of kids, possibly millions of kids will go and see this film without any knowledge of from where and whom the story came from... they will inevitable decide that the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy is "crap" and that will be it... the guide will die with us, those who remember it as the incredibly funny, exciting book that it is and the slightly cheesy but fun TV series it was. this makes me very very sad.

"But Wait" i hear you cry... "what if the film is excellent and inspires millions of kids to pick up and read the origional books in a harry potter style frenzy??"

yeah.... i can't see it myself but we can hope i am wrong.

i can imagine the final scene of the movie... Martin Freeman and Sam Rockwell go running through a graveyard, upon finding douglas adams grave they commence dancing on it and throwing their evil money up in the air.

One thing it is worth bearing in mind is that the book, the radio series and the TV series all have subtle differences between them.

So it will not be surprising if they have some differences in the film.
