Guest Perfectionist Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 (edited) Picked up one of these (although a bit cheaper :D ) :- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...3&rd=1&tc=photo which works perfectly with TomTom and my JAM :D It comes with a Cigarette Car Charger which has a standard USB connector.... I am wondering if I could plug my JAM Sync/Charge cable into it to charge in the car ?? Wondering also if I could plug the USB cable into my PC to charge the GPS Unit ?? Would they have differant voltages (or something) that would fry the wrong device if plugging into the USB - or does it being USB mean everything should be compatible and will charge up without any problems ?? Appreciate the advice :D Edited March 11, 2005 by Perfectionist
Guest MitchellO Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 I have a USB Cigarette light plug (it goes into the lighter socket and has a powered usb port on it) and it works fine with the cable that came in the box with my XDA Mini. No problems, and it was for an iPAQ 2215.
Guest FragMeister Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 I bought acar charger with a USB port and Sync/Charge cable from morpethmobiles off ebay - see here. Am going to send it back, as they have sent me 2 chargers, neither of which charged This doesnt charge my Jam, as i think it is not delivering the correct voltage/amps - as it will charge by jabra bt800 headset fine.
Guest coolcatshaft Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 just pick up a spv c500 charger from any orange shop for a tenner been using it since i first got the jam a few months back and had no problems.
Guest GothTeddy Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 USB is 5V, so it's just the current handling you have to look out for.
Guest Metoo Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 USB is 5V, so it's just the current handling you have to look out for. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not quite true, some HTC devices need a signal on one of the Data lines before they'll charge, which often isn't supplied by a standard car USB adapter.
Guest MitchellO Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 Here is the HP one that I use. I just plug a USB-to-mini USB cable in and I have an in car charger. Works perfectly. If you look at one of the pics, it shows it provides 5.5V of DC power at 700mA. Haven't really tested charging speed but it works great.
Guest Perfectionist Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 Good ol Volts & Amps :D Just looked on the AC adapters of the two devices :- JAM = 5.0V & 1.0A = USB PC Sync Cable ? GPS = 5.3V & 0.5A = USB Car Charger ? Does this mean if I use the Car Charger to power the JAM, it will work fine just take twice as long to charge OR wil the extra 0.3V fry it ? And if I plug the GPS into my PC USB, will the double Amps fry the GPS ? ??
Guest MitchellO Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 If the JAM/XDA Mini is 5v and 1000mA, and the charger i am using is 5.5V and 700mA, then it would seem to be ok for the slightly higher voltage and lower mA. It should just charge slower. Not sure about the GPS on the PC though. it could be too much, but i don't know.
