Guest xda-rocks Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 I get loads of free minutes, but don't like paying for GPRS. I can set-up a dial-up server on my home computer and connect to ActiveSync via gsm and use my free minutes to collect my email. Is it possible to use this same method to surf the net, once connected to my home network. I know that it only connects at 9600, but at least I won't have to pay any extra for it. I used to be able to do it throught my ISP, but now they only have non-geographic dial-up numbers and they're not included in my free minutes.
Guest fraser Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 They usual way of running a modem service on Windows is using "Remote Access Server" (RAS). I don't know if it's possible to dial in from a mobile, but if you do a few googles with terms such as "microsoft ras gsm phone" you will likely find that someone else has done this before, or at least asked about it and gotten an answer.

Guest fraser Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 If you are only checking your mails automatically every hour you wouldn't notice it.
Guest xda-rocks Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Thanks for the advice fraser. I've got it configured through activesync and so it connects and syncs as with usb, but I want to be able to surf the net occasionally. I know that 9600 seems painfully slow, if you disable pictures and are looking mainly at forum sites, it's just about bearable - if you're just collecting email automatically, it doesn't matter that it's slow. I'll keep trying to find the right combination of words to google the answer.
