Guest flashflash Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 HI, still struggling with the idea of parting with £400, however, Im sure if I see a Jam in my hand, I would buy one. Is there any shop that has these on display. From what I understand O2 hasn't released their mini yet in the UK (I be wrong). Also, do you need a cover, or is the screen safe in your pocket ( without the obvious keys and coins!!) many thanks
Guest mupwangle Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Are T-mobile shops not stocking it as the MDA Compact?
Guest MitchellO Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 I wouldn't put the Magician in your pocket without some case. At the moment, I am using the stock case that came with my XDA II Mini, but have ordered a leather one that should arrive soon. The screen, although small, is to easily scratched and broken to put in a pocket unprotected. Not sure where you can see one (I live in Australia). Look for the XDA II Mini, Imate JAM or MDA Compact. They are all the same except for a little software and the branding on the case.
Guest GazH Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 I popped into a T-mobile shop and asked the assistant if they had any to look at. They had a space on the shelves for one...but no demo version...I had to ask.. HTH Gaz

Much heavier than I thought it would be. But very small in comparison to M2000 and the camera is much better than on the C500.

If you need a case because the screen is easily scratched or broken then whats the overall size like with the case. I'm not a fan of cases because they normally bulk up the phone and make it a nightmare to answer the phone quickly. Is this the situation with the Jam?
Guest newmoomin Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 i got a nice ADVERTISING SPAM alu case for mine which protects it well, but added too much bulk to the phone. I now just carry it in my pocket and if teh screen breaks, then i get a new one on issurance!
Guest En_croute Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 (edited) The included case, a belt clip, hasa magnetic fastner, so is quick to release. Suprisingly, I quite like it - access is easy and quick. I started using it after I droped mine onto the road, unprotedted. It survived, but I learned my lesson. There are some on eBay that look good (and some that look awful) as well as some on accesory sites. Edited March 16, 2005 by En_croute
Guest MitchellO Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Its one tough device this thing. I have seem dings on this site even worse than that with the unit still working fine! I have no probs answering quickly with the supplied case. It is quite a quick action when on the belt, and not toooo slow when from the pocket. I would rather miss a call once in a while than have my screen cracked or scratched though.

Guest Metoo Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 (edited) there selling a silcone case and belt clip combo on ebay, thats looks quite good? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've stopped using mine. They look nice, but they're a complete dust, grit and fluff magnet. All they do is transfer the crap from your pockets (and any surface you put it on) onto your precious Magician. Sooner or later, some of it is bound to work it's way into the Magician's delicate nether regions, which can't be good. Now I just keep it in my desk for cleaning my mouse mat and getting crumbs out of my keyboard, which it does very well :D Edited March 16, 2005 by Metoo
Guest MitchellO Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 I have seen those silicon cases and they look like they provide little protection at all, let alone protection from the screen (aka. none). Their cheap but they do little.
Guest Hainsey Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 why dont you just put keys and phone in separate pockets?
Guest flashflash Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 why dont you just put keys and phone in separate pockets? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My original post did say "without keys & coins", but everyone seem still to have cases. So are you saying the screen is ok without a case in the pocket. I currently have a C500 and keep that in my pocket without any keys or coins and apart from the dust (thats another story) its ok. However, since the Jam has a touch sensitive screen I was wondering if that is easily damaged..
Guest Disco Stu Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 It doesn't seem to be from my experience. The only damage to my screen has come from playing Virtual Pool Mobile. Although I agree with Metoo on the silicon-case-as-grit-magnet issue, you can always use a screen protector with it. I quite like the extra grip and (false ?) reassurance that if you dropped it, it would bounce.
Guest MitchellO Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 I wouldn't put my pocket pc in my pocket without a case for screen protection. My Jornada 545 (my first ppc) ended with a big crack on its screen that way.

My Jornada 545 (my first ppc) ended with a big crack on its screen that way. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Personally I don't use a case because of the extra bulk. I've only ever bought one case and that was for my ancient Nokia 8110. I dumped the case after a few days. I keep my keys/wallet in one pocket and the Jam in the other - usually with the screen toward my leg. If I crack my screen, I'll claim on my insurance. For normal wear and tear, well, I only expect a phone to last a year anyway. (I have a screen protector installed to stop scratching) Edited March 28, 2005 by StewieUK
Guest Chaser81 Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 The phone is okay in a pocket as long as its the only thing in the pocket. I, unfortunately, made the mistake of not paying attention and dropping my Jam into a pocket full of coins and scratched the hell out of the top of it.
Guest MitchellO Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 I have to say , the case on this thing is sooo tough. I just did the sugarcube trick to remove the label, and I was sooo scared it was going to scratch the top of my Mini where the labels were. Not a single scratch, and a beautiful, no-branding HTC Magician! Without checking serial numbers (and the ROM) you wouldn't know it was an XDA II Mini. Looks great! I just left the Pocket PC Logo below the screen.
