Guest matth Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 hello and good afternoon, I've ot a problem with the email on ma trusty SPV. I've done a thorough search of the existing posts and not seen a problem like mine. I've configured my freeserve account in the email set up. entered a name, the email address and the server type (POP3). Incoming mail server : pop.freeserve.net Outgoing mail server : smtp.freeserve.net Network : The internet Added my freeserve username and password. Composed an email, come to send it, phone dials out, connects, attempts to send and immediately recieves an message back from "system admin" - your message could not be delivered to the following address. However it will successfully send to freeseve accounts, BUT nowhere else. Noticed on one post that the orange smtp server needs to be set for outgoing mail. I tried that but it made no difference. Any help would be appreciated. cheers
Guest NXNM Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 You cant use Freeserve's SMTP server, you need to use mail.orange.net or smtp.orange.net (cant remember which it is)
Guest matth Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 cheers for that NXNM. tried both your suggestions, both failed to download. Gives the "an error occured whilst downloading". To use the orange smtp don't you need an orange mail account ? not sure what's going on here really. any more suggestions ? cheers
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 You don't need an Orange.net account to use the SMTP server. Set your outgoing server to smtp.orange.net, and the incoming server to your freeserve address. P
Guest matth Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 Cheers paul, but still not working properly. incoming mail server is pop.freeserve.net outgoing mail server is smtp.orange.net sends and recieves but then tells me that i've either not got network coverage (doing this throught the usb cradle) or my account info is wrong. double checked them and they seem ok.
Guest NXNM Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 Ahh, so your using your PC internet connection through USB so the phone can access email? Well you need to use your ISPs SMTP server then. BT : mail.btinternet.com Freeserve : smtp.freeserve.net Erm, cant remember any of the other at this time but they are all similar to that. SMTP is closed relay by ISPs which means people cannot connect to it to send mail to other domains, this is how Spam is sent. So you can only send to external domains if you use your Network's SMTP server, that way they know who you are because youve dialed up and authenticated with them.
Guest matth Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 HURRAH! It's worked at last. nice one chaps. cheers! ;)
Guest smartman Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 hi matth can i please ask how you managed to setup your e-mail account cos ive had the same problem you had, would appreciate the assistance regards ;)
Guest matth Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 aye no bother, i was using the email this morning, worked great. get into your mail setup. enter your name enter you email address set the server type to pop3 Set the incoming mail server (mine is pop.freeserve.net) Set the Outgoing mail server (smtp.orange.net) Network should be set to : the internet Enter the Username provided by your isp and your password stick a tick in the save password bit . hit then next button and you're away! if you've got the spv in the usb cradle, take it out, compose a new message and send it to a mail account you can check on your computer. this set up works on my phone, hope it works for you. cheers
