Bubble Wrap Anti Static?

I need to send some static-sensitive computer parts in the post but I dont have any of those special "Anti-Static" bags that OEM parts always seem to come in, but what I have got a lot of is Bubble Wrap!!

Will this do as a replacement or will it damage the parts?

'fraid not...

most antistat bags are of a proper construction - specifed plastics or even 'metalised' - and wont generate static potential when rubbed together.

i cant say i'm a specialist on bubble wrap (Zoltan suits aside...) but i cant see it being made any other way than as cheap as possible...

There is pink bubblewrap that is antistatic. Go to your local 'tronics/PC shop and ask if they have any. Might even give you some...

standard bubble wrap would do more damage than just putting it in a cardboard box!

Id visit maplin or similar, get the proper stuff.

All that said static tends not to damage devices anyway, but if it does go wrong and you dont follow electrostatic handling guidelines and procudures you are left liable

anti stat is a difficult one when it comes to damaging e/nic components... A whole industry sprang from the possibility. Back in my electronics past, one of the engineers i worked for showed me the damage static potential can do to an FET (field effect transistor).. It basically degraded the silicon substrate that the device was made of and the overall effect was an indeterminate shortening of the life of the device...possibly...possibly not... see what i mean?

If you're sending PCBs/PC Cards etc, it is worth protecting the bare components when shipping with antistat wrapping but that wont stop Postman Pat practising his FIFA Streets technique with the box...
