Guest DaveBurgess Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Hi, Read a thread about this but not clear whether it is possible or not. I have a PC on ADSL, with Bluetooth dongle, which is currently used to connect to K700i from time to time for ringtones etc. I am thinking about getting a C500, and would like to know if it is actually possible to browse with IE over Bluetooth and use my ADSL connection for internet access. Range limitations taken into account. i.e. broadband enable the C500. Anybody do this? Thanks, Dave
Guest Confused Stu Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Yeah, I generally try to do all my phone surfing on the computer's broadband - it's quicker and cheaper than GPRS! To do it, you set the phone's internet connection to "automatic", then connect via bluetooth to the PC and activesync (an art to set up in itself, but generally very reliable once you've got it working) and then hey presto! If you select Internet Explorer on the phone you'll see internet pages come up without the GPRS clicking on. One minor niggle, you can't get into Orange World WAP sites through this method, as it comes up with a message that you're not an Orange phone. That said, it's more than made up by the fact that it's really quick at downloading internet porn this way!
Guest SiDHEaD Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Hello, Just tried this and it still dialled the GPRS. Is there something I need to enable on the PC? I am defo connected properly - as it has synch'd and I can browse the phone etc...
Guest Thurstan Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Once the phone is synched, go back into connection settings and select 'Pass through connection'. That should do the trick. You have to make sure that 'Allow passthrough' is selected in the ActiveSych settings first.
Guest DaveBurgess Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Thanks for confirming that guys, sounds good! Now let's get a bit more technical! Anybody know what happens with regards to IP addresses etc. Does this work like 'Internet connection sharing" , what IP address does the host PC give to the Phone? If you browse to a site that reports your IP address, what does it say? How usable is the browser in reality? i.e. can it support fancy sites, secure logins etc? Cheers, Dave Questions, questions, questions!

Surely you're firewall will block your IP address from being seen anyway? :D You are limited by the browser re fancy sites but bearing in mind the size of the screen it works OK. You can log in securely and I've had very few problems.
Guest DaveBurgess Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Good to hear that the browser is usable, looks like I'll be buying one! My interest in the IP stuff is because of my firewall setup. I prefer to be able to have fixed IP's for each device (PC's, PS2 etc) so that I can craft individual firewall rules for each. If the 'passthrough' of C500 appears as the IP address of the hosting machine (effectively NAT'ed), then it makes it difficult to split the traffic at the router. Still, free browsing from the sofa would be great! Is this Active sync part actually necessary? Wouldn't the bluetooth network alone do?

Wouldn't the bluetooth network alone do? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Activesync is necessary to enable the pass through as the phone doesn't have BT network capabilities - but you can set your active sync as a guest (although this needs confirming everytime you connect) or you can tell it to not actually sync any mail, contacts etc. I find syncing vital as it keeps my contacts safe if I lose or break a phone. I wouldn't set it internet access via pass through connector...as you will need to change it back when browsing over GPRS. Set it to Auto and it will detect whether there is an internet connection available before it tries GPRS. I also set my browser options to single clumn so you can page up and down sites without having to scroll sideways as well.

I don't want to have to visit the PC everytime I want to connect using the phone, kinda defeats the object! So it is possible to view a whole web page, if I am prepared to scroll left/right up/down then?

Once it has synced, about 20 seconds, hen you can surf at will. Yes you can scroll around a full web page with graphics. Don';t know the technical specs, but it 'feels' a bit quicker than a dial up connection
