My first thoughts on the SPV C500

I am no stranger Pocket PC but I have only had a bit of a play with Windows Mobile.

Last week I decided to upgrade my T68 which although old is in my opinion a fantastic phone. I bought an Orange SPV C500s. Now I may be stuck in certain ways because of the length of time I have spent with the T68 but I believe there are some things I either don't know how to-do or are missing.

1. Editing the menus - who even designed the order the start menus use what’s shooting. Please tell me you can change that.

2. Why doesn’t the thing display that I have a voice mail. It displays a missed call but not that a voice mail was left.

3. No indication of what profile you are using (apart from silent)

4. Why doesn’t the keyboard auto lock after x seconds/minutes - I know I can just hold the call end button down but I a forgetful and want it to automatically.

5. How do you turn on predictive text i can't see it anywhere.

I am sure there is more but I will post it when I find it.

Aside from those relatively small things I do like the phone, but need to get used to using it.

Good choice of upgrade by the way, even though it does have it's minor niggles! (DUST!!)

1) I believe there is software for the fone that you can install that will change the order of listed programs. I don't use it but sure I've heard of it, search modaco for the answer!

2) After you have looked at who's call you've missed in the call log, the icon will change to the voice mail icon, if indeed they have left one.

3) Press the power button briefly and this will bring up a quick menu that includes the current profile in use with a tick next to it. The original E200 homescreen (available for download through downloads in the orange menu on the c500) has a tab on it for profiles - moving across to this will tell you the profile in use. Also some custom homescreens available on this site and coolsmartphone.com (and many many more!!! :D ) will have a plug-in that will show the profile onscreen at all times.

4) Settings\Security\enable phone lock This will give you the option to autolock the phone with a password after one minute onwards.

5) Pressing * key (also says T9) and holding it until a menu pops up whilst entering text in whatever (mms, sms, internet...etc) will give you the option to use T9, multitap symbols and numbers

This phone is so customisable it makes up for it's shortfalls, stick with it and read this forum and other smartphone websites, you'll soon pick up what you want to know.

I know what you mean about the T68. I've still got mine as my second phone :D

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, I will have a look around. I was sure most of the things I spoke of where available, I was just being impatient.

Try Smartione for changing menus.

Just because it is different from the t68 doesn't mean it's worse. There are a few minor niggles but most things are customisable so you can get it to do almost anything.

It does take a bit of getting used to but changeing from one make to another always does. If you play arround a bit I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Good luck :D

The easiest way to edit your menu's is to attach the phone to your PC and browse to / Storage / Windows / Start Menu and create folders to organise the items more logically

You can also do this on the phone itself, using the built in File Manager app (you can't do it with 3rd party File Managers because the Start Menu items are protected)
