OK so my contract with orange has expired and i am free. My old phone e200 is still probably better than many of the bog standard phones that people buy but i want a new one. But there dont seem to be any phones that really stand out - they are all too.... something! What I really want and i have been doing my nut that people aren't trying to get it to catch on is wireless connectivity to the internet.

The possibilities are endless if you have wi-fi on your phone. The hp ipaq 6340 is pretty sweet for that but it is a brick and is £400. So stuff that.

Does anyone know whether a wifi sd card will work with the e200?

Or what the best way to get cheap reliable internet on your phone (I hate paying orange for the priveledge of downloading). Or maybe recommend back doors to get wi-fi on a phone (any phone)...

Seems like the mobile phone operators have much to loose if everyone starts using wi-fi. Windows messenger will kill text messaging! Skype-like programs will kill phone calls! Sounds great but I don't know what will happen with wi-fi and phones. Haven't even got it yet...

Wi-Fi is not a competing technology with mobile telecommunications.

Wi-Fi is a computer networking technology and it has limitations that prevents it from being truly *mobile* - unless you can within the range of a hotspot Wi-Fi is useless, and while you are free to roam around wherever you like within the Access Point's range, you lose connection very quickly near the edge, and Wi-Fi devices often do not roam from one Access Point to the next as the user moves from one to within the range of another. Wi-Max may change all that but it is still too far away.

A lot of people have WiFi in their homes now and with the advent of VoIP (Skype, etc.) this would mean they can use their comfy mobile phone to make free (or cheaper) calls to each other.

Free mobile phone calls if two people are using Wifi - surely that's fantastic even if it is only in your home/hotel/McDonald's/Airport?

And surfing and MSN or Agile Messenger in the garden, what more could you want?

Back to WiFi and the E200. This has been mentioned a lot before, and is in theory do-able. WiFi SDIO cards are available and the E200 apparently runs SDIO Now! software. The one downside....... no drivers.

Someone was allegedly Beta-testing some drivers on his E200 but that was ages ago, and despite endless e-mails to all the WiFi SD card manufacturers no-one seems to be able to say if or when drivers will be out.

My guess is that someone, somewhere, realised the possible revenue loss for the Cellphone companies and has pulled the plug.

So anyone fancy porting a driver over from Pocekt PC, is this even possible? And if you do can you make it SP2002 compatible?
